Would guess combination of where you were flying in from and number of pieces you had. Hollowed out those would have held lot of drugs or explosives.
I fly internationally regularly with a couple cameras and one extra lens. At most I have to turn cameras on to show viewfinder, usually they go through scanning no questions asked.
Anything I charge for I often say the repair, photo, whatever was free but my time, experience and expertise will cost you $xxx. This way she is NOT paying for a photo of her son and makes her argument mute.
But I do like the idea of placing a copyright stamp across the middle with your business name, email and $15 price for reproductions, then send free to her.
For those who don't use brand name straps because they don't get paid to advertise, how much is Op Tech paying you? See their name on strap and would consider switching for income.
To answer your actual question of $125 or under I think the Sony W800 is good choice if want to work mainly on composition or a lower end Nikon CoolPix (500?) if more control. Check selling apps for used - find the interest level before a higher investment. Eight year olds attention spans/interest change weekly or monthly.
Nice pics although a few could have changed the focus a little. Good for you for most shots. Some like flip phones and typewriters but, oh, the world that opens with a smart phone and a computer keyboard. The same can be said of camera settings.
