Hot Springs, Arkansas, USA in 2008 – St. Luke’s Episcopal Church Part 1, the church and some windows

In June 2008 the secular chorus I sang with went to Hot Springs, Arkansas to join other groups to sing Hadyn’s “Creation”. We rehearsed in St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, which is a stone Gothic Revival building. Its gable-roofed nave is dominated by a massive buttressed stone tower at the front, topped by a tall parapet. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. The church is blessed with 19 wonderful stained-glass windows – in order to show all of them to you, I am creating 2 sets: Part 1 contains some views of the building itself and 7 windows, and Part 2 contains the last 12 windows.

A very fine set--well done! You do it somewhat the same way I do, I see. (We do what works.)

Beautiful shot. But why use image stacking? Aren't they all at infinity?
I think it is used to increase the exposure.

Gorgeous series of Russian Orthodox churches !!! Is it my imagination that Russian Jesus looks better groomed than others. Shang
Thank you for coming, and the nice compliment! I don't know about His grooming--maybe just cultural differences in what that means.

Spectacular shots and place🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞 Thank you for saving me tens of thousands of dollars in travel expenses 😇
Joe, I appreciate your nice comments, and am pleased you liked my pictures. I do think there are advantages of seeing the place in person, though.

Oh, yes! I will never forget the first time we entered St. Peters in Rome. It was, as they say, a religious experience. And La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona is something I would love to see again, now that the interior is finished. It was still pretty much grey cement when we saw it around 2007. When I first saw the exterior all I could think of was the sand castles we would build at the beach by trickling sand and water through our fingers.
I have seen (and sung in) St. Peter's in Rome, and visited the Sagrada Familia. Frankly, I didn't care for the Sagrada Familia--the windows are ugly, in my opinion, and the exterior is grotesque. (I am not a fan of Gaudi's work.)

Absolutely. I went non-stop to Australia a few years ago, something like thirteen hours and it wasn't nearly as bad as going to Africa. I don't know why, maybe going west instead of east? But I would go again in a heartbeat.
Next time I will schedule a layover in Europe for a couple days.
I agree. I've flown from California to both New Zealand and Australia (and back) and from Minneapolis direct to Kenya (and back). All were very long and uncomfortable flights. But. . .it's necessary to get there.

Curious. So have I.

Hi, nimbushopper! Thank you very much.

2Dragons, I can understand your view. That does not keep me from enjoying the beauty of these religious sites.

yssirk123, Thanks. I appreciate your nice comment.

Stan, you echo the thoughts of some. I don't think it was the clergy who were seeking glory by building these gorgeous structures, but usually the potentates in charge of the location. Always a contest to build the highest or most elaborate church. The icons and stained glass windows did serve a purpose, though--most of the parishioners in those days were illiterate, and those details were used to illustrate the stories in the Bible. (I won't give the same credit to the televangelists.) Thanks for the nice words.
