Quite right.

I quit wearing mine after coming close to a potential hand disaster at work one day. Here is one example. A google search for "wedding ring danger" will come up with many more links.

Why would a space force member need a knife like this.

Here's an interesting article about the thinking behind the design of the original astronaut knife.

My father was in an infantry service company in the South Pacific during WW2, and brought this KA-BAR home.

Don't know the full story of where he got it, he was the first to note that he never saw combat. At the end of the war in a service company the GIs had plenty of time to kill, and he made plenty of projects, including this sheath stamped with service data. On the back is stamped:

"GIVE ME KENTUCKY...LAND OF BEAUTIFUL WOMEN AND FAST HORSES."

Merlin Bird ID gave Eastern Wood-Pewee as an ID for this bird, with another possibility being a Willow Flycatcher.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

One thing I learned this year is that both adults will sometimes get inside the tree at the same time, along with however many nestlings there are.

So far I've only seen one baby beak poking above the edge, and that was only one day about a week ago.

I've since read that RHWPs can have up to two broods per season, and also can reuse the same nest cavity for the 2nd brood. Based on some guess-timate math I think I missed the fledging of any in the first brood, and this photo is of a fledgling from a 2nd brood, taken on 21Aug2021. I missed his first flight by about a day...

This is what a bird at rest image is supposed to look like! Wonderful light, composition, color, etc. Fired on all cylinders with this one!

Thanks so much! Love it when a plan comes together.

Beanbag on the upstairs windowsill, the bird landed at that level, morning light from the left, and lots of pixels to play with.

I'm a big believer in taking a LOT of shots, and staying on the bird until it flies off. So I had many backgrounds, poses, and head tilts, etc, to choose from.

Thanks again,

Thanks all, glad you liked it!

This bird definitely had a presence, "robust" is how I would describe it.

I've seen a Great Crested Flycatcher before, but rarely at our feeder area.

While watching hummingbirds this morning, this pretty bird showed up. Never actually came to any feeders, it was content to sit in a nearby tree and just watch.

Great series, good captures and lucky you to be there.

Thanks, Jeff!

I use my flickr account albums as an archival timeline; went back and found that the green herons have been nesting at this same pond every year for at least five years now.

So I hope to be there in the spring of 2022, too!

A really nice capture, Joe. It looks like a Tern, though, not a heron.

Yes, Joe, that is a fine image.

I checked Merlin Bird ID, and they gave me four choices. I guess one good tern deserves another?

Great sequence! Those chicks look like they are ready to be weened!

Won't be long. When it's time the parents will let them know vigorously!

GREAT opportunity WELL done ! .......thanks for sharing

Thanks, you're welcome!

One of the earlier tries was a mess...too slow a shutter speed by trying to keep the ISO low.

I've gone back several times since my initial post about finding the unexpected Green Heron chicks in a willow tangle at our local park pond here in KY.

This is an adult, perched at a favorite spot a short hop away from the willows, prior to committing to feeding the chicks.

Flying in to the anxiously awaiting chicks:

It is first come, first served, this time. The chick clamps onto the parent's beak, and when opened the food transfer is made.

The others close in on the parent, not everyone gets fed every time.

The chaos doesn't last long, and the adult makes a getaway!

GRHE_FeedingTime_06Aug2021_081 by Marshall Smith, on Flickr

Total time from fly-in to getaway was approximately 4 minutes.

[quote=bluezzzzz]Went to my favorite local park pond here in KY on Saturday to try and get some photos of Green Herons before they are gone for this year.[quote]

Thanks all!

Glad you liked them and found it interesting. Looks like I will have the opportunity to go back and check their progress in the next few days.

I'll try to hang around long enough for an adult to come in for a feeding. It is total chaos and actually looks dangerous for the parent, with all those beaks flashing around!
