Thank you David. When it was delivered last night it was too late to go out with it and today were are going to get some much needed rain so I'll have it out over the weekend.

Hey Mac, enjoy the new lens. Always fun getting new "toys" to play with. Us boys and our toys ... the only thing that changes over the years is the cost!

The 90 day warranty is a Nikon Warranty for their refurbished items. Cameta is giving you those extra 9 months. They are gambling that the camera will last for at least one year. It's a sales pitch. And there is nothing at all wrong with that. It sells for customers. Who wouldn't want an extra 9 months on a warranty? Just make sure it comes in the authentic Nikon Refurbished Box.

Me! Although I have never dealt with third party providers on camera gear, I have with other products. It usually isn't much of a warranty at all. Not worth the hassle. It is a selling point, and in this case it worked. It made you choose them over two other stores (your choice by the way, and not altogether a bad one.) You probably will never have to use the extended warranty (at the least let's hope so) mostly because things that go wrong, go wrong within 30 days of purchase.

Without question, the 35mm 1.8 DX would serve you well.

I'm sure it will ... for things other than street, so it seems.

The kit lenses are first rate optically and ergonomically. They're cheap enough to replace if you lose or break one---or wear one out--which you won't do.

I have no problem with the kit lens that came with the camera. Used them for over a year. I like the range of the 18-300 ... just looking for more. If I had it to do all over again I would have bought in the range of 18 -140.

If you shoot nothing but festivals, the 35mm will probably be OK. If you shoot on the street, well, good luck. I bought a 35mm for my D5200, specifically for street shooting. Used it twice for about five minutes each time, then ran back for my 18-200. The 35mm just doesn't have any reach, especially if you shoot across streets and down streets, as I frequently do. As far as changing lenses during a shoot, it seems it would be a pain and a waste of time. Besides, you don't know where your next shot will be coming from. Will it be seven feet to your left, or across the street? Even at festivals (and I've been to a lot this past year) I take the zoom. But, this is just one person's opinion and shooting habits.

Well that sure answers my question of using the 35 for Street. Thanks, Voss.

I have a question for the Street Crew.

I am for all intent and purposes a non- professional. Photography is my hobby. I have a Nikon D3300 that I am happy with and don't ever see myself going full frame. I did, before coming here, purchased an 18-300 lens figuring it would cover all my needs without having to change lens. I now know that was a mistake from reading here and also from experience. That lens is heavy and presents a problem if I'm lugging it around all day, which I seldom do. If I had it to do all over again I would have opted for something in the 18/24 - 104/140 range from what I have learned from reading the Hog. Now I'm thinking about a 35mm prime for my next purchase for taking street photos. I go to street festivals and most of the pics I take are in and around that focal length. I also have the 18-55mm and 55-200mm kit lens that came with the camera. I still use the 18-55 on occasion, but haven't used the 55-200 since I bought the new lens. So, what say the Street Hogs, 35mm prime? Oh, and I'll also be picking up a 85mm macro in the deal.

Apaflo, I was not at all offended by your earlier post. In fact, thanks. Tom

I'm glad you were not offended and came back to post these. They give others ideas on how to perfect "the shot."

I was going to post what I thought was a street shot, but because of your previous post I learned it would not have been considered street.

I'm learning by others experience. Great pictures, thanks

Voss borders on greatness with a fairly high percentage of the photographs he posts here!

The distinction you picked up on happens because there is a difference between Event Photography and our target in this section, Street Photography. Performers are typically photographed as part of Event Photography, but anything "staged" is nixed for Street Photography.

So it is as much a predetermined mind set of the camera operator as to which kind of images to take. Stage or street performers are targets for Event Photography. It is specifically the people and what they are doing, so that can usually also be called People Photography...

Street Photography tends more to capturing the intangible relationships between objects, which are commonly people, and the other objects around them... in a way that is a portrait of humanity or life, and not so much of specific people.

Hence once a photog gets into Street in a more than casual way, these other interesting views that Voss comes up with are indeed the whole point of looking for a photograph to make.

Of course there are multiple ways to accomplish the same thing! Garry Winogrand rather famously snapped a shot of anything and everything "just to see what it looks like photographed". Then much later he sorted through the rolls and rolls of film to find things that did look interesting when photographed. He made an effort to wait long enough to not really remember what he was thinking when a picture was taken. His judgement was about the print and not about his memory of the scene.

These interesting relationships are what makes Street Photography fun and diverse.

Thanks for your reply. I am learning a lot about this hobby of mine. I also have some great teachers by example here. I am starting to look at the world around me in a completely different light. I live not far from Disney World and I think the next trip there will not be about taking pictures of the flowers there, but the people around me. You are right, it is about the discerning eye. A trait that can be learned and perfected with practice.

I bought off of Craig's List a Lowepro small camera backpack for $15. Worked for awhile. Now that I'm adding equipment and have outgrown the small backpack I went looking for for something a little bigger for storage. I found it on Craig's List. A Naneu Sahara 271˚F bag. For $75. I use the small bag for camera gear and traveling and the bigger bag for storage of gear I'm not using. Works, at this time for me.

Thank you Voss, through your pictures you are teaching me how to graduate from a picture taker to a photographer. I was just at a festival where I concentrated on getting the shot of the band instead of looking for the opportunities in the audience itself.

Before becoming a member I bought the 5.6. Since learning by reading this forum I have found most of my shots are between 18 and about 110 focal length. On a recent cruise with this lens on 100% of the time I shot maybe five pictures over 140. For me, this lens needs to be either on a tripod or Mono-pod (I have and use both) if I want clear pictures. I just can't seem to hold it steady enough at the slower shutter speeds. Bottom line for me is that I would have been better served with a 18-135 or 18-140 lens. I do like the lens though.
