Being critical of your work is the only way to reach that next photographic plateau. Without being critical of your own work, it would be much harder to improve your photography. I think most of use are our own worst critic. Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.

For years there has been an exemption on duties for optics into the US, and that has always been extended to camera's sold with optics. I believe it started years ago with medical exemptions for optics and was extended to all optics imported to the US. I have never heard of any changes to that law. I confirmed it many years ago, when I was doing a lot of eBay internationally,,, both buying and selling worldwide.

I believe it can be documented by visiting any larger USPS facility in your area of the country.

I still buy quite often from Japan and have never paid any import duty on camera's or lenses. I no longer sell internationally, although I've never experienced any losses or import duties either way, to Asia or Europe.

As all attornies told me when I made credit union loans to Law Professors at the University of Oregon.
"Ignorance of the law is your best defense in a court of law!" None of them would ever read a promissory note or loan document when presented to them. Don't ask!

As I am sure you will understand, I am not presenting this as a legal opinion. That would be incredibly stupid of me and any other non lawyer on this forum.

Ask at your post office, or I hear Michael Cohen may need your money. Oh wait, he's been disbarred, as have many Trumpies.

Two things that are self deprecating and lead to failure in your achievements.

Proof reading your own work for one. And for two, evaluating your own artistic endeavors. There are audiences of people who do that for you.

Your job is to create a body of work. It is the more profitable to turn the job of evaluation and criticism over to others.

It is even more disastrous to self evaluate when conditions (environmental) are not conducive to producing a strong flow of work.

You, are your own worst enemy in the post you put forth. Self criticism is deadly to your well being. Show your work for critique only. Both good and the bad.

Very sage advice and not something I gave much thought of in the past. I just produced what I felt good about never asking for or doing self critique before. I know critical analysis can be good if given in an objective and professional manner.

Yes we all can but what is the reason that compells you to do so?

We do it because we want to express how we see the world. We watch ourselves grow with our art or not... We'll probably still do it. We don't need to toot our own horns, but we should enjoy other people's reaction to what we do. It's best to stay humble about ourselves. No matter how good we are, there are/will always be people who are better. I don't much care how many times someone has been published. It's insignificant. I've seen nice things published, as well as crap.

I agree with most of what you say but being published is a great boost to know one is on the right track. Would I continue to do this if I was not? Absolutely. As far as published images being crap. All in the eye of the beholder and I may not like some images but would never call them out for their success.

OK so now you are back on track. What are the names of some of the periodicals?
I don't spend a lot of time worrying about my past mistakes or getting all worked up. I learn from them and understand what I did wrong and move on.

I hope I am back on track and time will tell. The magazine is Our Iowa and has paid for my travel expenses the past three years so I can develop further as a photographer and as a person, appreciating the some things in life.

I don't worry about past mistakes so much as my concern was becoming so self critical I was destroying my creativity and style in the process.

I also find that I am drawn to less developed, less populated locales with wintry weather vistas. My primary goal is always the same, to see beautiful places; if I wasn’t worried about this post becoming an argument on existence, I would say, to see the beauty of God’s creation. My next goal is to point my expensive camera at this place and release the shutter, probably more times than I should have. Yes, I am trying to capture a sharing worthy photo but regardless if my photos meet all the pixel peeking standards, I still have had a most successful outing by bringing home the wonder of the things that I have seen.

I have spent the last couple months shooting in adverse weather conditions. I spent my down time doing a lot of self evaluation during those times also and started becoming self critical and questioning my reasons for my photography. I got to the point of giving up as nothing looked good enough in my mind anymore.

Pixel peeping at 100% and seeing things that I did not like. Who does this as a viewer looking at a print? I scolded myself for being that critical.

I was printed almost 2 dozen times last year in a magazine and was on the cover of one issue and came to realized my work is good enough to be printed and I was doing something right and should not question it and not change it too much. I would be messing with my style.

Maybe it was the Winter blues that got to me but I seem to be in better frame of mind now and back on the path of my success the past couple of years.

Nick Page says it best in the video link above. Why do you do photography? What are you stories and how do you deal with self critical analysis?

If you are buying a camera based on Instagram you are buying for the wrong reasons. You should be asking yourself what are your goals with photography, fame, likes, or because you enjoy doing it. Would you buy a new camera if there was no Instagram?

See a lot of questions about time and how long it takes. Who cares if it is an image you like and want to correct as best as possible time is meaningless if it is important to you.

With software advances this is the reason I never cull images. Imagine where it will be in another decade and how many images from years past can be corrected and made into usable ones. How much is that time worth?

I watched a documentary on Netflix last night - "Beyond the Curve." It was about the growing popularity of the flat earth movement. It was disappointing. I expected members to offer their "proof." The only thing they did in terms of proof was saying something vague about planes flying in the southern hemisphere and being able to see buildings in the distance. Actually, I'm surprised they used the term "hemisphere."

They did put a lot of emphasis on two scientific experiments, one using a $20,000 gyroscope and the other using lasers over a distance of several miles. These two experiments were going to prove that the earth was flat. The gyro experiment didn't turn out the way they wanted, so they tried it two more times in different ways. Now they are planning to try something else with the gyroscope. It was the same with the laser experiment. When they didn't get the result they wanted, they said they would have to try it a different way. So, if you want your calculator to say that 1 + 1 = 3, modify your calculator.

What's scary about this group is that they reject facts. As more people accept the idea that the earth is flat, there will be more people willing to reject facts and believe conspiracy theories. Supposedly, NASA and all the governments of the world are involved in a conspiracy to maintain the idea of an earth shaped like a ball. This great lie has been maintained for hundreds of years. A reporter asked their "king" why they couldn't just travel to the edge of the world. He said they are getting funding to do just that.

Their king said that doing a search on Google used to bring up 50,000 items. Now, you get 90 million. Stupidity, gullibility, and rejection of facts are dangerous characteristics of a population. For example, we didn't really land on the moon, lizard people are ruling us, the government is holding aliens at Area 51, there is a secret alien base on the dark side of the moon, chemtrails are poisoning us, the shooting at the Sandy Hook school never happened.

Actually contrails aka chemtrails can't be good for the atmosphere or the planet as there are chemicals in them from the burning of jet fuel. The majority believe in c*****e c****e but themselves poo-poo things like this. When you see the sky filled with these trails how can you think there is no harm?

But then the jet-setters would rather see us earthbound people give up more so they don't have to...
