You are also using FF D8XX - correct ? F9 is helping the image also. Still, quite GOOD considering the distance !

Thanks, imagemeister.

Yes, a D810. Actually, this is only my second time out shooting BIF, and the first time trying out the TC. With the TC I have been able to auto focus as wide as f/7.1, but shot these in aperture priority.

Thanks for the excellent pictures wolfman. I like taking pictures of BIF, but in my limited experience I didn't use so high ISO settings. Did you have an issue with the noise in PP?
Thanks

Thank you , zaidy.

With the combination that I was using, at aperture f/9, it required a higher ISO setting to maintain a fast shutter speed for BIF.
I use DxO Optics Pro Elite Edition for noise reduction of the raw image, and then LR for further processing. DxO does an excellent job without destruction of the detail in the image.

I was looking for this Heron for a few weeks, and I was finally there at the right time. I had my Sigma 150-600 Sport and 1.4 TC, on a Nest gimbal head.

Hello everyone,
I am FINALLY able to get some of the equipment I want, and would like input from those of you Nikon DSLR lovers who have experience with any of the following equipment;

List of items for Saturday morning purchase:

1 Nikon D810 Camera Body with 24-120mm f4 VR Lens
Plus Nikon Lenses:
16-35 f4 VR
200-500 f5.6
1 Extra battery EN-EL15 Lithium-Ion
1 Compact Flash Card: 64 GB
1 SD Card
1 Flash-SB5000
1 Cable Release MC30
1 Polarizer filter plus adapters for the lenses (I know I can't use lens shades with adapters, but have to price out Polorizers for all 3 lenses.
ND filters plus Variable ND’s by Tiffen 2-8 stops
GPS Unit GP1A Versus Solmeta...Solmeta is cheeper! Anyone with experience here?

Is there anything you can think of that I'm missing? There are tons of packages out there in cameraland, but the items that come with them (I've been told) are generally lower quality. I realize that with the items listed here that I'll be without a NEW lens to cover between 120-200mm, but I have an older Nikkor lens that can be used: Nikon ED AF Nikkor 70-300mm 1:4-5.6 D It's not nearly as sharp as the newer lenses I'm told, but I could use it in a pinch. I used to shoot advertising images, but am selling my 4x5 view camera. It's a Toyo View D45M...all metal with a great bellows, and a Rodenstock Sironar 210mm lens, metal case, extension rail, Poloroid Back, cable releases, extension lens shade (bellows), perfect ground glass etc. Glazer's Camera has offered me all of $50.00 for these items. I also have a Gitzo tripod for it...heavy duty...goes up to 16'! I've been offered $65.00 for it, and I have a Nikon SB28 Flash, for which I've been offered $25.00. It's HEARTBREAKING!! I also have a Nikon D90 35mm camera that they won't even take! They tell me that no one wants these any more. Does anyone out there know otherwise?
Any opinions would be greatly appreciated!

The 16-35 is an excellent choice, but check out the Sigma 150-600 Sport. If you can handle the extra weight, there's extra reach, it's completely weather sealed, has better build quality, and from a lot of reviews, better IQ.
As far as filters go, check out the Lee system. All you need is different adapter ring for each different lens diameter.

DxO OpticsPro 10, for extremely noisy images. It will remove the noise without compromising detail.

FWIW, the EXIF data from Picture Information Extractor (PIE), on the Sigma 150-600 Sport, shows Min. Focal Length at 151mm and Max. Focal Length at 604.1mm.

I have the Breakthrough X3 10 stop ND filter, which I don't use anymore, since switching to the Lee filter system. It is an excellent filter, but it got to be a real PITA having to screw it off and back on when recomposing the scene.
Yes, the Big and Little Stopper will give you a blue cast, but that is easily corrected, as other colors are not affected. Also, if you want to combine filters, such as a CPL and graduated ND filter, with the ND filter it is very easy to do.

Is it sharp throughout the range? Center sharpness goes to Nikon. What about other criteria such as distortion, chromatic aberration, vignetting, coatings to increase saturation, reduce flares, ghosting, vignetting, AF, construction, weather sealing, aperture blades, etc, etc.

The link you provided compares the Nikon to the Sigma C. Gene was referring that the Sigma S is sharper than the Nikon.
Here's an article that compares the Nikon against the Sigma Sport. The Sigma Sport is obviously the better lens.

I have a Canon 70D with a Tamron 150-600mm zoom lens. I live in Sydney Australia, and I recently purchased a Jobu Jr3 gimbal head as well as an Induro Alloy 8M AT313 tripod. I am very happy with my equipment. I am replying to this post as I was about to buy the Nest gimbal head which was available for a very good price. I asked if I could check it out in the store and noticed that it was quite stiff with the knobs for tilt and rotation completely loosened. Gimbal heads, when correctly balancd should swing freely with a slight finger movement, and consequently I did not buy the Nest gimbal head. You get what you pay for and it is important to purchase a gimbal head with quality bearings.

Maybe the fluid in the head wasn't distributed properly, by rotating the swing arm, and the base, multiple times, per instructions included with the head.
I have the Sigma 150-600 Sport, D810 w/battery grip and 2 batteries. Total weight...10#. I can easily move it with one finger.
