Thanks for the information regarding removing the "s" after http. I'd done a simple copy/paste, and in facebook's URL the "s" is included. Do you know why this is?

The "S" indicates it is a secure web site, not sure why they don't work when pasted, but they never seem to. (I'm not up on all the techie stuff anymore, got to old to keep up with it)

I do love history. I manage a museum site on facebook with a growing 850 member/friends and we often really get into the local history. You could have a look if you want:

You have to remove the "s" to make the link active.

It will be be inevitable that there will be a major change in our future. Currently the international money standard is the US $. China is working hard to change that to the yuan. Presently when you buy oil or anything from another country for that matter you must purhase US $ to pay for it. China is already setting up a way of using the yuan for their purchases of imports. The world is watching the turmoil that is happening here and becoming leary of our plight. It is not if but when the international standard changes the US $ will become pretty much worthless. I believe every country that tried to print more money to pay debts has eventually failed and we won't be an exception. (We have been doing that for years) I see a grim future for our future generations.

I have heard for years "don't carry your Social Security card with you". But what about your Medicare card? You have to have it with you in case of an emergency or accident and it has you SS number plastered all over it. Don't even need a special scanner to read it.
Also, I have five years of military service from back in the '60s. I don't have a Veterans Identification Card. Should I have one, do I need it?

If you have good medical coverage you don't need the VA coverage really. If you don't have coverage it can be a blessing. It saved my life. It is based on your income though. When I first applied I was disqualified as they use the previous years income. I made a fairly good wage when employed and that kicked me out. I reapplied the next year while on unemployment and was accepted. There is a copay for most things and that is also based on income. The facilities and your local should also be considered as some areas don't have as good a facility as others and the larger ones are very crowded and long lead times for care are the norm.

The bar code on your VA Medical card has some potentially damaging info embedded. Please watch!

CF cards don't last forever. Have you tried a new card?

So here's the first thing with Windows 8. You pay more to get nothing.

No MS Works (I know it wasn't part of the OS, but it was always there), can't find the Calculator even...which I think is there. No paint I think. Fundamentally nothing of use.

How nice.

Fortunately I have a version of Office 2010 I think I can activate. I'll try that next.

And I'm leaning towards giving in the Adobe cloud offer vs. getting what I have on it working.

Ain't progress great?

Nope Works is gone! Wordpad is there as well as the calculator. Use the search function instead of the old "start" button to find your "regular" programs. It actually works faster once you get used to using it.
Most everything is an App now also. Programs will still work OK if W8 compatible, around 90% of mine did.
If you go to the free W8.1 upgrade it WILL push just about EVERYTHING to the cloud. As I don't always have an internet connection I decided not to do the upgrade. (We live on the road most of the time)
Yes most days I do hate our current rate of progress too.

I was a peace officer and worked in a warrant unit and many times I had my female rotty ride in the back of the police car with the prisoner to make him behave and not kick out windows, etc. They never knew it, but she was a mush and wound never bite anyone, but they were terrified because of the breed. She was a beautiful dog.

Yes mine is the same, he won't even defend himself against other dog attacks.
She is beautiful too!

I just realized I can get one of these (non VR) for $300-500.
If I ended up with a Nikkor D 105 mm F/2.8 D, would this be a good lens to use with extension tubes to achieve pretty good 5:1 to say, maybe 10:1 shots? If not, what would be the best or second best way to do this?
I have been doing a lot of reading trying to figure out what's what and I think I am starting to understand a few things. So, please be patient if I ask really lame questions.
The 105mm is widely used in macro with a set of tubes. (I wish I could afford one) Kenko auto tubes are very good and considerably more cost effective than Nikon. A ring flash attachment for your speed light is also very well liked but a simple diffuser for your speed light is optimum in my opinion. They are available pre-made or simply make one from cardboard and paper towels. Made mine in about 30 minutes. Go up to the top header and use search for macro. There is loads of info to help you with details. I just play with macro but I really enjoy it.

Best dog I have ever had. The only one that came close was a Pit. It is a real shame that they have such a bad reputation when it is mostly the owner that is at fault. We mainly live on the road in a motorhome and it is sometimes hard to find a campsite because they don't allow specific breeds of which Rotts fall into. We don't even fool with KOA's anymore, they are the worst ones for it. My Rott is extremelly dedicated to me. He is also a "talker". Scares the hell out of everybody when they pet him as he "purrs" like a cat does.

We have been known to clean up or move things in a natural setting, like moving a flower or a leaf for a better background. I put sugar water on flowers that I want in a photo of bees. I put out orange slices in areas (away from my house) when looking for bees and butterflies. Some here also carry a jar to capture an insect, then chill it in the refrigerator to slow it down for photography.
A few keep insects in cages and feed them (aphids are a favorite food) and then photograph them or their offspring.
Some raise caterpillars and photograph the emerging butterfly. A couple here have even photographed a mosquito biting them. (Not me I swat them).
