Thanks for the information. I'll be even more careful with my card now.
Veterans Identification Card
Safeguarding Your VIC
Veterans are warned to keep their VIC safe and secure. Some bar code readers, including those available as applications on cell phones, can scan the bar code on the front of the card, and reveal the Veterans social security number. This could make the Veteran subject to identity theft if the card is lost or stolen.

This is like a lot of things so you have to be very careful with everything. By the way if you show your card and I mean only show it at Home Depot and Loews they give 10% discount on all your purchases to veterans....Rich
I guess I've been lucky. I've gotten the discount every time I showed my card. If the clerk at check out wasn't sure they got the manager he said yes and I got the discount...Rich
I have heard for years "don't carry your Social Security card with you". But what about your Medicare card? You have to have it with you in case of an emergency or accident and it has you SS number plastered all over it. Don't even need a special scanner to read it.
Also, I have five years of military service from back in the '60s. I don't have a Veterans Identification Card. Should I have one, do I need it?
What a bunch of hooey. Many stores require ssn to use a check, etc.
Ones ss is now public knowledge. just go on the web google your name and some company will come up that will give you for a small fee your address, ssn, driver's license number, etc.
It's good to have for medical. I use the VA for all my medical including cancer surgery and since I'm a Koren Vet it cost me nothing. I've been using them for years and am very satisfied with there service....Rich

I have never had anybody ask for an SSN to pay with a check. Preprinted check with name, address and phone number and they may ask for ID but never an SSN unless it's the IRS and you're paying your taxes. If they did I would tell them to pound sand. If they asked for
your SSN I can understand they would be leery about accepting a check from unsavory characters.

If you have good medical coverage you don't need the VA coverage really. If you don't have coverage it can be a blessing. It saved my life. It is based on your income though. When I first applied I was disqualified as they use the previous years income. I made a fairly good wage when employed and that kicked me out. I reapplied the next year while on unemployment and was accepted. There is a copay for most things and that is also based on income. The facilities and your local should also be considered as some areas don't have as good a facility as others and the larger ones are very crowded and long lead times for care are the norm.
I also understand you have to have served over seas and you had to serve during war time. Like you said if you have a good income you have to pay a deductible. My self I also receive all my meds.for free. I have had a few surgery's and they were all covered. I am very thankful for the VA as it has been a life saver for me....Rich
The VA has had a number of scandals including inadvertent release of hundreds of thousands of records. This has happened at least twice ... that I know of.
Any plastic ID type card, including some credit cards have a chip in them. They can be read by an "RFID" scanner right through your clothes, and wallet. Wallets are available that block "RFID" scanners. Aluminum sheets cut to size to fit in your wallets will do the same thing.
