Just checking in to see what experience any of you have had with ordering and receiving the Nikon D800. Ordered mine on 6/26 and was told 5-6 weeks delivery. How does that jive with your delivery length of time or otherwise? :?:
Thanks,
JC

Hello all,

This is a photo I took going toward Sunset Crater, Arizona last month. I did a bit of burning on the sky and tweaking the hues on the mountain tops. Let me know what you think.

Thanks,
Don in TX

Pix of the original would be 'illuminating'....

[quote=les_stockton]sometimes, to get out of a slump, I'll go photograph something that is outside of the subject matter I usually shoot. Just to do something different.
Or I'll explore some technique that I've seen done, but that I've never tried, just to see how my first attempts come out.

I have recently tried the same technique of doing something different. In my case, instead of just hiking with my P&S Lumix hand held, I decided to take my new Manfrotto out with me and force myself to use it on every shot. It was interesting how many potential pix I passed up because of the effort of setting up the tri-pod. I found myself thinking through the available shots with more care. After returning and viewing, I deleted far fewer pix, but am also concerned that I may have missed that 'great shot' that one happens upon from time to time just because of no hesitation to just take it! Sometimes you get a great surprise when you spot a potential pix, get down on your hands and knees and discover the unexpected that becomes the keeper!

I suspect I'll save the tripod for my new, heavier camera/lens combo and keep the Lumix handy for the 'spontaneous' shots that can produce surprising results...

Nice collection of forest mushrooms.

How are your post process editing skills? With a bit of tweaking, I think you have the makings of some decent wall-hangers.

I believe your Nikkor 60-mm macro will be of great benefit to you. Does your Nikon have a fixed or hinged LCD screen?

Thanks for the comments. I used to be a darkroom hound back in the day (B&W and Color) and am getting familiar with Paintshop Pro X4 which was given to me. Any suggestions you have regarding specifics on post processing tweaks would be greatly appreciated..

Should've added the body I have on order is the D800 which, of course, doesn't have the hinged screen. Thought about this at the time of order, but a right angle finder is available though don't know how useful..

At the moment I'm using a Lumix ZS7 and will continue to keep it in my bag for those shots that demand a small, compact camera to get the right angle. My Nikon gear just ordered, even with the 60mm Macro (Micro), will probably not allow me to get the angle needed on some shots.

Thank you sir! New gear just ordered will add to quality of my printed media, but probably not noticed via computer/forums. My subject matter will vary as Shrooms here have a very short lived season of no more than a couple months...

Call ahead before you arrive so I can make sure and be availailable, eh? Dry spell going on the last few days and if you are coming for Shrooms, you will be disappointed. Shrooms thrive on shade and moisture and at the moment, our mountain is only providing shade. Heat is oppressive, even at this altitude (85 here today). Watch the weather for ZIP 28730 and if you see high humidity or rain is expected, bring it on!

Rest assured you would only have to drive up to my log cabin in your vehicle (on paved roads), then hike around only another 300-400 feet altitude, but over some miles to see what I see.

Most are poisnous for sure so would not recommend any sort of consumption. Unusual angles give the viewer something different to consider since shrooms are usually viewed from directly above. Making a pix unusual or different is my goal....in addition to pursuing a technically high quality outcome of course. :)

Disagreement is good! I think the key issue on this photo is the intended subject. Photogs luv the unusual, however, the masses are going to have their brains hurt a bit.. On the other hand, that can be good/provocative and create questions which is even better!
