It's one for your portfolio - "Demolition a speciality".

I learned one of my first lessons in photography with a Fuji. I bought an s8000fd and less than a month later the s8100fd came out (10 mp instead of 8). I wondered why Argos were selling mine so cheaply (d'oh!). Can't complain - for what it cost me it was a very capable camera.

See the earlier posting "Getting old - what to do" in this section for a multitude of suggestions. The monopod seems to be the most suggested answer.

Even with hardly any or no PP, they will just look like pictures taken on a very sunny day. Not a major disaster.

The aurora isn't guaranteed, but most people who go there or live there mention the strange beauty and magical atmosphere of the place. So no shortage of photo-ops. Congratulations on taking the initiative. And comfort is so overrated...

It's a great effect and worth trying to capture. You'll probably find that a slow speed and a high f setting will give the camera an easier time of it. A tripod or monopod will help with the long exposure time (unless you've got REALLY steady hands).

PS Be sure to show us the results. I've got more examples of it not being captured quite right (camera limitations, of course), but that's probably not what you're looking for.

You may also find that it's a question of quantity. The camera may tolerate a small amount of reflected light, but too much will cause streaking or saturation.

This was on the limit of my compact.

If your camera's sensor is CCD, it will be prone to streaking, but if it's a recent CMOS sensor, you may find that you can get away with photographing the sparkles directly. I found that keeping the aperture small helped to avoid streaking.

I love the pictures you posted from your Coolpix 7700! Wonderful photos, great quality, thanks for posting!

Thanks very much, richnash46.

I didn't invite any criticism in my first posting, and that's exactly what happened - nobody said anything. I was pleased with the results, but I'd have to admit to being somewhat biased. Thanks again.

How about

Realiability issues with Nikons greatly exaggerated.

Just out of curiosity what kind of blue unit did you buy???

I was waiting for someone to ask that question.

Stop going off-subject. Everybody knows the sensible question to ask is "What shade of blue?". If it isn't gunmetal blue, I'll be unimpressed and disappointed.

The scientists are concerned that future machines might take actions they think are beneficial but could actually be deadly.

We've had this problem for a while, but the perpetrators aren't machines, they're politicians.

Ahhhh excuse me. But what is the empty gas can for ? Even on a bus you could probably carry a full can.

Tramsey will probably tell you it's to carry extra beer (just in case).

I had to give Paypal my credit card number, not my checking account number.

Ditto. As mentioned above, after a while they asked me if I wanted my main account tied in to Paypal. For security reasons I left it with just my credit card account. I don't think that Paypal is a liability, but the only people who have online access to my main bank account are me and my bank. And I intend to leave it that way.

I've just realised what your main query was. Your credit card account will have an account number, so give them that number, not your main account number. If they still want your main account number, it's time to get suspicious - is it really Paypal asking, or a convincing scammer.
