There’s a big difference between putting a 2x teleconverter on a 70-200 f/2.8 lens than there is in putting a 1.4x on a 200-50 5.6 lens. There are limited focus points that work at f/8 and they’re generally gonna be slower because of lower light. My 200-500 focuses plenty fast but I’ve tried it with a 1.4 and it only works for static subjects.

Isn’t the lens losing 2 stops right off the bat? The 7100 has I think 15 cross focus points, plenty for wildlife with a fast focusing lens, which the g2 is. If you’re looking for wildlife clean (not convoluted) reach trumps everything.

The "faster" AF of the D500 will be limited by the third party lens with 2X !

I have used the Canon 200mm 2.8 prime with a 2X back in the film days for wildlife and got rid of it fairly quickly - very disappointing ! I have also used the Canon 300 2.8 with 2X - which I recommend highly - IF - you can deal with a single focal length - it has become my frame of reference for all other lenses. ! (= 900mm on crop frame)

So, asking a third party ZOOM lens with third party 2X to give acceptable results for most serious wildlife shooters today is really not a popular option - and deservedly so - especially when cropping is a real possibility with the relatively short focal lengths - but I am sure it can "work" on some level for some people. Maximum AF and optical performance will always be optimized using current OEM lenses and extenders on current bodies IMO.

Again I agree. And again from personal experience. My wife is a fairly accomplished wildlife shooter and shoots an 810 (which is supposed to be a landscape camera but easily captures osprey in steep dives) and a 200-500 Nikon. which isnt the worlds fastest focusing lens to begin with, and has excellent results. She put a 1.4 Nikon TE on it, and wont use it at all anymore. In her words "turns my lens into a brick and wont focus fast enough to catch a bird walking let alone flying"

Lens ! - and ways to support it . ......Wow, I guess I am the only one .......a 200mm with 2X - REALLY ??

I agree. The D7100 is a capable camera...thinks its around 6fps. In wildlife you you pretty much have the shot in 4 or 5 frames or you dont. but 600mm is going to give you literally thousands of opportunities that you WONT get with 10fps and a rigged 400mm. Believe me...I have both and never carry the 400 for wildlife. Glass before camera!

Have had good success with MPB.Bought 3 cameras from them and a few lenses. Altho they are not refurbed you can find some with very low shutter counts. Just bought an 850 with 4560 SC for $2397 with 6 month warranty. Nikon refurb was $2799.

$500 is going to be tough. Unless you plan to hand hold and rely on optical stabilization, you'll need to budget for a decent tripod and head. For birds, you'll want good autofocus.

This might work and at $460 buy it now price it's within your budget:

I took a lot of pictures with mine on a 10 mp and later a 12 mp Nikon. My version was not stabilized but as you can see it was decently sharp. Shooting raw and careful post processing will help the images look better.

I had this lens and it will serve you well. You might look at a tamron 150 600 G I there is a newer model but I havent had any complaints with mine.

Way to much. As an old graphic designer I can tell you people will blow by this. To complex at first glance. Think of white space as your best color. Same space...maybe 4 items or 5. Look at it like a portrait. Eyes go to the bottom...too much pink? Etc.

I shoot at an animal shelter every week and use either a 35-135 $59 G lens or 80-200 on a D800e. I try to keep at f/4 or so for DOF...fences in background etc and 1250 1600. You can freeze the typical dog at 800. As always depends on light. Get the dog as far away as possible. Turn loose and pick him up in the frame and focus until 40 or so feet away and shoot CH until he’s almost in your lap. My 800e is only 4fps..so I might get 8 shots, but I rarely have to shoot the same dog twice.

The D7100 has an internal focusing motor and you could use screw drive lenses on it. Older ais lenses have to be focused manualy.

Is there anyone out there who has worked in a wet darkroom and not taped a quarter to the end of a coat hanger and did some dodging?
