They can fit a lot more into the software in a dslr, why not?
If you don't intend to use those fancy functions, you won't need those pages.
It would take you less than 15 minutes to become familiar to set the basic functions on any new cameras.
When you are used to the new camera, then you might want to explore the added on functions and check which one would make your photographing easier.

The newer Nikon's are getting around the mirror problem by having the mirror remain up during the burst. It probably aids, too, in the number of fps that a camera can achieve.

As far as the number of functions on a DSLR, I remember posts questioning why cameras had to have the capability to film, when the photographers had no interest in doing so.

Why not? A camera is capable to do filming without adding much hardware cost to manufacture and just a one time firmware development cost. It will be a good selling point to both worlds.
If a dslr has all the fancy functions/mode, the result should be better than those of P&S.
Just like your smart phone, even though its primary purpose is phone, but all those add-on features have made life easier and happier.
I think it soon to or already happen(s)

How many functions do you want? I recently upgraded (???) from a D200 to a D7100 for the extra mega pixels. It has so many functions that I'm about ready to throw it into the river! And I'm still using the D200 and loving it.

I am sure your D7100 is much better than your D200, You can just use those functions/modes that you are familiar with. Would that make your pictures better?
Simple life is better. I know some people can't learn new tricks.
But those added on functions are supposed to make life easier; of course there is a learning curve.
For example, use a dslr taking panoramic, one has to pan several pictures and later find out the pictures didn't connect or not horizontal enough. But for those with phone, P&S, you can see the result right away to know if retake is necessary.
For some, photography is a life learning process, and for some it is a time-killing hobby.
I belong to both types or in between.

A single question:
Do you like predigested food cooked by some wannabe 'master chef'?

This is what a do-it-all camera does. Everything is decided by some engineer, and delivered to you as a 'final product' to accept as 'good'. A DSLR on the other hand offers fewer pre-digested options and allow you more control on what the camera capture. More often than not these cameras also offer a raw output that one can cook w/o (usually) the 'chef' bias of what is good.

Note that the top of the line bridge camera also offer the raw option. See if your 'meals' are available then.

So 'primitive' is not what I would call an issue. In fact I own a D500 and D850, cameras that are far from being 'primitive' but since I use them in the full manual mode, according to you they are worthless. I stripped them naked and let them run around risking an arrest for being in the raw and exposed in mostly public places. CALL THE POLICE!
A single question: br Do you like predigested food... (show quote)

Thank you, sometimes predigested jpg or mp4 would not be too bad as an option for the less sophisticated who might want to buy the expensive models just for their image and status.
I shoot my D610 in Raw/jpeg and M mode mostly, even my flash operates in manual only.
There should be a Raw-only and Manual mode only (no auto ISO nor WB) camera for the pro-pro, auto-focus is OK, isn't there?

So you know that one has to pay more to get less features.

Thank you, that's why I asked why not?
But as the selling point of view, why not the manufactures throw in or upgrade the firmware which they already have so as to edge out their competitors.
That's how Unix becomes the universal mainframe SW language because it was free to all university students who in turn helped out its research & development; same per Java.

"Corporate decision" is the best answer why.
Perhaps after polling users those features are not as desirable for the additional cost.
Perhaps it is more difficult to make the features you desire to the quality standards one would expect in a DSLR.
Bottom line you sound like my wife always asking why.
I say "Because".

When I see the world as not what it should be, I ask the question "why not?"

Why / when did you buy the D610?

I had 3 Pentax Dslr previously and decide to own a full-frame.
After looking sometimes for an affordable FF, I bought it at a bargain at Ebay in Apr-2015. I paid $1050 new(incl tax) while Amazon price was $1499+tax

Recently I bought a Panasonic FZ80 for my pending trip. So I have been busy learning its functions and I found it can do a lot more in picture taking and movie capturing than my D610 except detail/clarity/dynamic.
The question is whence the DSLR is a bigger unit, why can't the manufacturer pack those functions such as 4K burst mode, post focus mode, panoramic stitching, multi-focus stacking, live cropping etc. which I think can be achieved by software(firmware). Or the reason is my D610 being too primitive.

My son used a sling (screwed into the tripod mount) and it came unscrewed with handling and activity and dropped the camera. He was lucky, the only thing that broke was the lens hood. If I were to use one, I'D be certain the screw was very tight.

I agree, if you only connect to the bottom mounting hole, there are chances that bolt could be undone. And it is troublesome if you then want to mount to a tripod.

This is a photo forum and a picture worth a thousand words.
I have hard time understanding how and what you guys did with your straps by your descriptions.
I think I am the only one using a dog leash to improvise the camera strap.
I also bought a pair of padded shoulder strap for my camera bag or back pack whichever I choose to carry.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/2pc-Padded-Shoulder-Strap-Cushion-For-Oudoor-Sports-Backpack-Sling-Waist-Bag/253221847044?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649
Then I can hook either or both cameras to the holes of the padded shoulder strap.
I find it very handy, easy and comfy to my neck; unless you don't carry a camera bag/backpack while you are with the camera.
Please note that I used 2 nylon cords to connect to the bottom tripod quick release ring for easy and fast mounting.
If anybody still don't understand what I am trying to say, I can provide more pictures

I'm not sure what your saying. Are you suggesting that Nikon shooters don't have to shoot raw because their jpegs are better than Canon's!

Nikon's raw files with .NEF extension can be viewed by most freebie picture viewers such as Faststone, even the MS File Explorer can pre-view the thumbnail.
It make sense to shoot nef+jpg if your Nikon has 2 card slots, and you don't have to download the jpg card, but in case...

People not shooting raw may be due to one or more of the following reasons
. They prefer originality and claim their shots are unprocessed.
. They are satisfied with the post processing result with the simpler(free) software.
. They don't need to pay for fancy software (LR & PS, Topaz)
. They don't have to time to work on every shot.
While people shoot raw are more perfectionist and sometimes over doers.
I shoot jpg and raw but my wife says the original raw or jpg are better than my processed ones.

Shoot and save in both, and edit both to see which you can come up with better result.
Sometimes, I have to struggle to make my raw>jpg better that the camera's jpg.
Raw editing requires some learning curve, but you could be familiar with most basic techniques in less than a week
