I also sent my D750 for the latest recall and got it back few days ago. No autofocus issues.
Only few settings were changed, but not a complete reset. File number was reset, but shutter count has few more than what I had before. Some of the function keys were mapped to something else, but my Image Comment and Copyright Information data were intact.
Mine D750 was noted as Non-US and was updated with latest firmware 1.12. The Nikon service center I sent mine to was in Los Angeles, CA.

If you can't get it sold locally on Craigslist, Ebay or Amazon would be my second choice.
Set the camera to P for Program mode, then use exposure compensation (+) or (-) to brighten or darken the picture.
