My D750 was in the most recent batch of cameras affected by the shutter service advisory. I sent it back to Nikon in Melville and waited for 2.5 weeks for its return. It arrived yesterday with a repair summary that said they replaced the shutter, updated firmware, and adjusted the auto focus.

Now, when I depress the shutter halfway to achieve focus, instead of seeing one or several red focus points of my choosing, I see a random scattering of three to five, smaller rectangles than before that flash and change positions and change from black to red and back to black again. The multi-selector wheel no longer controls the selection of focus points. (It is not in locked position.)

Does this sound like my camera needs to go back to Nikon for another repair? I hope I'm just missing something. Thanks in advance for your replies.

Considering the firmware was updated, is there also an updated manual?
Check what version manual you have and what the latest version on-line is.
When I updated the firmware on my camera a while ago, I suddenly had some features that I didn't know how to deal with, and were not explained inthe manual. Getting the newer version of the manual explained it all.

Take the camera off AF-A, go back to AF-C or AF-S and respect the focus points you were using before.

Thanks, Morning Star. I will check the online manual. It's just that the behavior of the autofocus system is so random that I think something is very wrong.

Or go thru all your menu settings and learn what they are all about. I have a feeling that there is a setting that simply isn't the way you had it set before and you don't know what those settings are. For instance, I know that I can turn on a feature to make the focus points blink or turn it off. I can make it just use one single focus point or many. In your case, it sound like it is simply using a bunch of focus points and the blinking is turned on. Simply change your focus options. I can't tell you exactly which ones to change, but it wouldn't help you if I did. YOU need to learn how to turn these options on and off. If you can't or don't want to read the manual and try different things as you read, the simply call Nikon and have them walk you through the focus settings util the camera is the way you remember it.

I would go back to your manual and carefully scroll thru all the focus settings on the camera. MT Shooter is right in his analysis. Your camera VF is showing you an AF-A setting.

Even though I have a D7200, the focus modes are similar to D750. Early on, I always got tripped up on the fact that there is a difference between autofocus mode and autofocus area mode.

Thanks, Jeep Daddy. I own John Greengo's Creative Live class on the 750 and it goes through every setting imaginable. I'm going through that (again!) today to see if it solves the problem.

Thanks, Mike. I'm definitely in AF-S and am seeing multiple focus points flashing around erratically when I depress the shutter. I also own the 7100 (which is operating normally) and I'm comparing the settings on both bodies. I am going to go through every setting today, and will call Nikon on Monday if I don't figure this out.

I believe it was mentioned in another thread that with the firmware update some, maybe all, the settings are returned to factory defaults.

My D750 was purchased in Apr '15, recalled in July '15. 10 day turnaround for new shutter and cleaning. Now it's on the latest list. After 2 years I don't mind if it's just firmware update and cleaning, it's free! And I don't have any intention to stop using it.

EDIT: This time I'll make a note of the settings before sending the body.

Thank you, RG. I have done all of that and I still get random focus points flashing around, no AF-S focal point, no ability to control it through the multi-selector wheel. I'm resigned to sending this back to Nikon. And I have to wait until Monday! Thank you for your help.

Thanks, OddJobber! I have two camera bodies and I keep both of them on the same basic settings (until I have to change something for shooting conditions) so I have a pretty good feel for what I use most of the time. I sync'd them and still no focus. Something's just not right with AF.
