Walking near my house; with my camera in my hand I just see better. This little seed pod on an ordinary weed would have escaped my notice if I hadn't been looking for pictures. Spidey just caught my I as he was walking across the yard.

If I took a picture of someone or someone's child and was asked to delete it, I would need a hell of a lot better reason than, "I might enter it in a contest," to refuse.

I'll be in Tenn, hoping for good weather. I plan to try to get some shots just so I can look at them later, share them, and be able to say to myself, "I was there." I also plan to take advantage of the professional pics that will be available. This is a literal once in a lifetime opportunity for me, so I will happily drive for six hours for a fifty fifty chance of seeing it.

I am an O F who takes pictures "only" for my own satisfaction. Many times that satisfaction is achieved straight out of the camera, also many times adjusting exposure, etc. using my very limited post processing skills makes a picture more satisfying. It is also very pleasant to have other people say nice things about a picture I have taken. The point is, I take pictures for fun and as long as I am having fun and doing no harm it totally doesn't matter whether I am trying to be Weston or Warhol or using a digital camera or a replica of the one Brady took to the civil war. Anyone who thinks he knows THE RIGHT WAY to take pictures is an idiot.

Here's a story from a different field, but totally applicable to your situation. Many years ago my karate instructor and I were talking about a student who had gotten his black belt and gone off to start his own dojo (karate studio). My instructor said, "Every black belt knows how to do karate; he must know how to do business if he is going to succeed." Take some business/accounting/marketing courses and the best of luck to you.

This is how it starts! You take a few pictures and it feels really good. You start to hang out with other people who take pictures too. You tell yourself you can quit any time you want to. Pretty soon you're squirrelling money away so you can buy more equipment to take pictures with. You start skipping work to go take pictures. And on it goes. Get some help before it's too late or you will wind up just like us! :P (Nice pics by the way. Welcome to the Hogg)

Nice. I love old barns and you have captured this one beautifully. Have you thought of making a copy in black and white or sepia? Sometimes it brings out more of the "old" character, the sense of how much history these buildings have.

I had pretty good success using a handheld slide viewer to hold the slide while I took a picture of it with my DSLR (Nikon D3100).

I too shoot only jpeg, and mostly I shoot using one of the "automatic" settings on my D3100. I am trying, first, for shots that please me, and second, for shots that I can enjoy sharing with others. In short, photography for me is for fun; I'm not trying to prove anything except that there is pleasure in seeing the world. I feel no need to be any sort of "purist."

Here's something to think about: First of all I shoot exclusively jpeg photos, only because I don't want to spend the money on an image processing program that I have to "upgrade" constantly, the other reason is because for me, shooting jpeg is a digital equivalent to shooting slides on film. I read an article many years ago that stated "if you want to find out how good a photographer you really are, shoot slide film" the reason being is that unlike negatives, slides cannot be processed like a negative, slide film is far less forgiving. One question I am often asked is "how do you do your post processing" when I tell them it is a jpeg many do not believe me and I have had people argue that such an image is not possible in jpeg mode one such image is displayed here.. I guess they are talking about the back ground. But the greater point I want to make is that "at the end of the day, it doesn't matter. when you get to the end of your life and you are standing before GOD, it won't matter whether you shot jpeg or raw, film or digital. I will probably have people jumping all over me just for saying that but that's ok.

Professsional: engaged in a specified activity as one's main paid occupation rather than as a pastime.
Busybody: a nosy, meddling person, who's very interested in what other people say and do.
My next definition should probably be troll, which seems to apply to me just now. :P

Welcome to the hog. Many smart hoggers have already responded to your question so I will just offer my own experience. I was looking for a DSLR (entry level) and couldn't see any real difference between the Nikon and the Canon. I made up my mind when I went into a store that had both; I liked the feel of the Nikon in my hand better than the Canon so that's what I bought. I have several lenses and leave the 70 - 300 on the camera with the auto setting on "sports" as my walk around setup. There's no flash, I can get a better than decent capture of anything from 6 feet to half a mile away, and I'm ready to catch that shot that is only there for a moment. Other lenses and settings (including all manual) let me play or work for that perfect shot when I have time to set it up. If you think photography will be fun go for the DSLR, if you just want snaps of the kids then the smart phone may be all you need.

Could someone please explain how someone else "chimping" is bad for me? Or even for them? Judging someone else because they chimp or don't chimp seems like a waste of energy, and if checking your work is bad, why did we have all those inspectors and quality control people where I worked?

You sir have provided the perfect answer! Of course, since your answer is a question I am sure that some of our all wise, all knowing gurus here at the hog will feel compelled to respond so as to guide us lesser mortals (who probably shouldn't even be allowed to hold a real camera) closer to the promised land.

Lot's of good info coming in. Thanks guys. The welding lens I'm using must be about a twelve because these shots were taken at ISO 100, F20 1/3200 sec. I'll be looking for something a little darker.
