My PC normally has 8gb RAM installed (2 x 4gb), recently I gave one 4gb module to my wife to boost her PC upto 8gb.
I have been using my PC since with only 4gb installed and to be honest I cannot detect any difference in performance even when using my PP software.
How import is RAM when doing photo editing, I am considering increasing my RAM upto 16gb (the maximum I can use), would there be any point?

I upgraded my wives HP laptop to 16gig RAM and 1TB SSD drive. Her computer boots up in 25 seconds and made everything seem faster. Did the same with my MBP i7 and had same results.

LOL, same with my wife and I. She is working on an album of Yosemite and Kings Canyon even as I type this.

My wife uses Shutterfly and gets crazy discounts. She gets coupons. Don't ask me how but sometimes she creates shutteefly books for free with coupons she finds.

Nope, but I've been to all three of your stops.

Wouldn't it be better to just find your own unique locations so you don't end up with cliche shots of what everyone else photographs. If you go to the Yosemite Valley, you won't need a guide, just aim your camera anywhere and you will get a great image! It is all good. I can give you one hint, I'd serious consider spending two days at Lone Pine and investigate the nearby Alabama Hills (looks like another planet, almost as strange as Trona), and drive up to the Mount Whitney Portal (parking lot and trail head). There is also a cool Movie Museum in Lone Pine. Bishop has some interesting shops and a Famous Bakery, and the White Mountains to the East look neat. I don't really remember there being much in Lee Vining, other than nearby Mono Lake. Good luck.

At Yosemite at the welcome center they offer photo tours.

I don't use a flash often but bought the little Nikon SB-300 to use with my D500. It works great for my use.
Nikon SB-300 AF Speedlight Flash for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ECGXAA0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_JcDDzbWVWPBBY

When using your camera if you can't figure out how to turn it off just hold it down as your taking a picture. Sounds like you are in full automatic. Next to your green automatic setting there is an optional setting m: full automatic no flash.

Go to Best Buy or a camera shop. Check out the Canon and Nikon there. They have a few models with both manufacturers. While you are at it, look at the Sony A6000 and A6300. Nikon, Canon and Sony offer great cameras.

I own a Nikon D500 and Sony a6000. Friend bought a Nikon D5300 last March for less then $500 on Amazon. He loves it.

No opinion on camera make or model. Just be sure which ever camera you purchase is a full frame which means better low light shooting. As far as fast focus goes the lens is where you need to look. I would purchase a short zoom with a fast aperture. Something like a AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR. The VR which stands for vibration reduction will enable you to shoot handheld and in low light without blur up to 4 stops less. Make sure whichever lens you choose has this. Other lens manufacturers call it by different letters but whatever you do, GET IT! You will thank me later on. PS: If it's REALLY low light you need to learn shooting with a flash. Aren't grandkids great!

Wait on the full frame if you are a Nikon person. Nikon might announce tomorrow an upgrade for the D6xx, D7xx D8xx

to me the question is what kind of a camera would I have with me most of the time. A big bulky DSLR with a lens the size of a bazooka or something I can easily take with me and get the shot of the kids.

Look at the following review http://cameradecision.com/compare/Sony-Alpha-a6500-vs-Nikon-D750 and then make up your own mind. I find that my DSLR is gone I gave it to my grandson, but the sony 6000 is with me all the time.

Its up to you!

That's a very good suggestion. I use my Nikon D500 with 200-500 for BIF and other lenses. Love my 35mm and use the 18-200 often.

But for everyday use and work I use my SONY A6000. Just have the two kit lenses with that camera.

A D5 to shoot grand kids...really?!?!?

Get a much less expensive camera that's still more than capable and then spend the rest of the money on a trip with the grandkids. That will be more memorable than anything you'll shoot with any camera.

As for a camera, pretty much any modern day dslr can capture what you need. If it can't, then chances are, it's not the camera, it's the person behind the lens.

Agree, with above. Buy the D500 pick a couple good lenses take a vacation with the grand kids. Just came back form a trip to Kruger National Park with my daughter. We had a blast. I used the D500 and 80-400 she used a Sony 6000 with 50-210 lens. We had a great time.
