Thanks very much.

Very nice series, lots of color and action. A trip I would love to make.
The shots of the single Lady in the runabout being chased by the tour boats looked like a James Bond scene.

Thanks for you thoughts Steve, I'm a fan of your work and videos.

Many of my images are purchased and framed by my clients, so I think about the edges when I'm making a shot, making sure there's nothing critical at the very edge of the viewfinder that might look odd if it was covered by a mat or frame.

That said, I don't think this is an excuse for "loose" cropping. I think you should get the crop right in the field, not drop 1/3rd of the image off when you get home.

Good point about the aspect ratio consideration, Thanks!

I often apply different crop ratios to images. So extra space around the subject gives you secondary stuff you can crop off if need be.

I mean, say you get a really great image and someone sees it and wants to buy a copy, but they prefer/want/need a square image to hang. You need extra on one or both ends of the full image that can be cropped off.

Get it right in the camera except..
should one leave room for objects near the edges that you don't want cut off when applying distortion control?

The Nikon "Holy Trinity" refers to three specific lenses- the 14-24, 24-70, and 70-200 all FX 2.8. It is what it is.
One cannot substitute lenses; because they are better or worse, or favorites, and still call the lenses the "Holy Trinity".

Hi, I agree 100%, those are the three that officially make up the group. But to the original question...

"I am shooting a Nikon 7100 ......what lenses does this refer to what should I be shooting and what is the "Trinity

would you recommend them in the context of DX? Due to the crop factor maybe the is none for DX? Thanks

Trinity- from the Latin "threefold"

For the Nikon d7100 The Holy Trinity from my research and experience are:

Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro for Nikon DX
http://www.kenrockwell.com/tokina/11-16mm.htm

Nikon AF-S DX 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/18-200mm-ii.htm

Nikon AF-S 300mm f/4E PF ED VR
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/300mm-pf.htm

There is better full frame glass out there but then you would be shooting full frame if you needed those.

The 11-16mm (16-24mm) coupled with the 18-200mm (27-300mm) covers everything you need, Add the 300mm (450mm) and you a great option for sports, birds, and isolated landscapes.

These are the three.

Is there a way to view the metadata of the photos posted on this site. I realize that some photographers do not want to share this information but for those that don't mind sharing sometimes this can be helpful.
PS. it would be nice if the site would automatically display the camera settings (ISO, Shutter Speed, F/ Stop, flash or no flash) unless blocked by the photos owner.

I does not matter. You seem to be thrilled at the offer so let it be at that.

Second guessing is always bad and will take away from your pleasure.

I'm currently shooting a D7100 but anticipate adding a full frame body in the near future. Most likely that will be a D750.

My current lenses are, in decreasing order of usage: Nikon 55-300mm f1:4.5-5.6; Nikon 18-55mm f1:3.5-5.6; Nikon 85mm Macro f1:3.5; Nikon 35mm f1:1.8; Tokina 11-16mm f1:2.8.

Since all of these lenses are DX format, I will need to begin adding FX glass. Based on my current usage I am inclined toward the first one being a midrange variable.

I would appreciate your recommendations on specific lenses.

Thanks,
Bob

So you already have a great camera and plenty of lenses to cover al the focal lengths so why duplicate things with an all in one zoom making your D7100 unnecessary. In my opinion, I would use you new FX body with a high quality prime lens.
I like the following for FX;
Voigtlander MF 40mm f/2
Nikon AI-s 55mm f/2.8
Nikon 85mm G f/1.8
If you have the money;
Zeiss 21mm f/2.8
Zeiss 135mm f/2
Nikon 300mm PF f/4
and (it works great on FX) your Tokina 11-16 at 16mm
