I got an email from the art director at Rhode Island Monthly Magazine asking for permission to use one of my pictures in an article about my home town. I said it was fine with me, just give me a credit line and a copy of the magazine. I didn't ask for any money because I didn't want to kill the interest and I'm not a professional. The shot was taken in 2009 and I cringe at some of the mistakes that are now apparent to me but, oh well.
The question is, should I have asked to be paid? How much? Keep in mind this is not National Geographic. The photo is attached.
Congratulations
Yes, you should asked to be paid. Not just so you won't be taken advantage of but every time one gives away a photo to a publication the likelihood of anyone getting paid goes down. Why pay someone when they can get you to do it for free. It damages the entire market.
Very nice image. Congratulations.
It's a tough call. I think if you wanted to be paid, you should have said so up front. I would let it go at this point.

With the exception of that magazine possibly being from a non-profit organization, I agree.
Look at it as free advertising.Congrats on being published. Great selling point to ther clients. In the future if you want to be paid have your fees in your mind before submitting.
I recently had interest from the US Bureau of Land Management for one of my photos of formerly wild mustangs. They want to use it in an upcoming advertising campaign set for next year. I knew they wouldn't pay much, if anything, but I wanted them to use the photo and give me credit. So, we settled on that, I gave them the photo, they will give me credit when it is published.
Going into the discussion, I had done some research and found that there isn't a whole lot of money to be made, anyway. Best to get the press and build the business through the exposure (no pun intended).
IMO, Yes. Even 20 bucks - just so they pay something. You have just added to the feeling of the magazine that photography is free.
Go to the store and tell them you are not going to pay for that bag of groceries, but you will tell all your friends you got the stuff at their store so they get "credit." :-)
Thinking getting credit will build your business is dreaming.
I think if payment was a option it would have been mentioned when asked about using the image ( we are offering $$$ for the use of it ) or something to that effect.
Pete
I does not matter. You seem to be thrilled at the offer so let it be at that.
Second guessing is always bad and will take away from your pleasure.

Your name is now out there. :-)
By giving them the image - they assume copywrite! A big deterrent in this part of the world...

Next time specify "One time use" rights and see if they are okay with it?

I got a couple winning photos on the internet (EAA.org Picture of the Month desktop wallpaper calendar - June 2012 and Picture of the Week 9/29/11 AvWeb, a daily aviation e-newsletter)...total compensation of one baseball cap w/logo, an autographed copy of one of the photos that I had framed (cost me about $40) and photo credits for each. One of my pics from Oshkosh '15 is going to be on the back cover of a 24-page book about the 2015 airshow season to accompany a DVD called "Fly Now!", both independently produced. I don't know if I'll even get 10 cents for each copy sold (first batch - 50 signed-and-numbered books) but proceeds go for brain cancer research - the producer, himself had cancer and started the fundraising charity...look up Brain's Flight on Facebook (was supposed to be Brian's on promos but he decided to keep the typo and run with it) or flynowmovie.com The book gets published in just under a month (12/12/15). I'll post pics of the book when I get my copy. I'm probably not good enough to go pro. I'm just glad someone enjoys my work.
