It appears that the original lens owner didn't get all of the great images out of the lens before they sold it.
That is what happens to me all of the time, sigh. . . .

I’m Rick who sold Marty the lens and chuckled when I read your reply. For some reason, when I owned that lens, it never produced pics like that. 😎.

If you all think those Zeiss macro pics he posted look good, I urge you to trot on over to Marty’s website and see his other work. Man has some serious talent. I guess his other lenses must be real good too! 😂

For what it’s worth, this shop is generally considered to be among the best camera repair shops in the country. Don’t be mislead by its name - they are expert in Nikon, Canon and Sony. It’s been my go to shop for Nikon repairs and a few years back I had a Sony A6000 repaired by them. Outstanding work always. I am an NPS member who lived about 30 miles from Nikon NY repair facility, yet for out of warranty work, I often chose APS. faster service, same price and you can actually talk to a tech (at least you could 5 yrs ago).

[quote=maxlieberman Also did not drive in the rain.[/quote]

See my post a couple above yours. My 69 began to slide around if there was rain in the forecast! If it actually rained, it was parked. But on a straight 1/4, mine ate similarly outfitted Chevelles and Fords, although some Boss Mustangs gave me a fits.

I have always been partial to Mopars. I had a 65 Dart, a 71 Plymouth and a 74 Plymouth 2Dr. with a huge motor. I think it was a Super Bee. Fast as the wind.

Fast only on straight away! 😎. Mopars in that vintage were pure drag strip cars. Around a track? 😩. My first car was a 69 RR in puke green with 383 cubes, 6 pack, 4 speed and Hurst shifter (with the idiotic S bend that made power shifting an adventure) . If the weather man even predicted a hint of rain, car stayed in garage. But Lord, I loved that car. The burnt orange color you show is gorgeous. Only color worse than my puke green was the next year’s purple.

What editing software is available to you? If you are using Photoshop, the new Remove tool is nothing short of amazing. It works like the old spot healing brush, except it sends your edit to the great Adobe server in the sky where AI is applied and magic happens. Only drawback is that it takes sometime to get the image up to Adobe and back, so even if you have a monster computer, that image will take quite some time to fix.

I just spent 3 minutes with the Remove tool on your before pic. Note that I did this quite heavy handed - no change of brush size or minute detail work. Just wiped away some of the garbage with broad strokes. The eyes are not particularly well done, but if I took the time to carefully apply the brush, the result would have been far better. You aren't gonna end up with a perfect photo even if you "do it right", but it will definitely improve what you started with.

I don’t often use Elements, but when you open a pic in ACR and click on the crop tool, the box that opens shows a button for aspect ratio. In that drop-down, all of the standard crops are offered as well as free form manual cropping. No idea why you are not seeing that. Is your version of Elements an old one perhaps?

Incidentally, while I don’t know this for a fact, isn’t ACR a standalone product that is the same in both Elements and full PS?

The general online opinion is that if lenses attach and disconnect with no problem, it's not necessary to send it to Nikon. On the other hand, if Nikon says you should send it, you should think about resale. Some buyers like to know if all the recalls have been done.

The “general online opinion …..” isn’t worth diddlysquat. I’m an NPS member who received his Z8 literally 2 days before the recall was announced and mine was among those affected. I had no issues attaching my lenses to the body so I briefly wondered about whether or not I should send it in. Contacted NPS and was told to send it in.

In retrospect, it would have been just plain stupid not to send it in. Inconvenient yes, but I would never make an important equipment decision based upon “general opinion” on an internet site. It’s my experience that such opinions are often just flat out wrong! Too many people on UHH (and all of the other sites) offer opinions on matters where they have little or no knowledge. Too many people lurking on websites feel the need to impress the others with their depth of knowledge in ALL areas of photography. There are people posting on websites like ours with 80,000 posts.
