My method, which I'm sure any halfway competent "photoshopper" will scoff at, is to copy and paste bits of background containing the color I want. It's tedious, it's slow, but I usually can get a result I like. It is possible to replace one pixel at a time using the pencil tool if you want to be that fussy. Full disclosure, I use Microsoft Paint because I haven't been able to teach myself how to use any of the many better programs available.

This may sound like, "Is it plugged in?" but doesn't this camera use "press the shutter release halfway down and wait while it adjusts the focus, then fully depress it to shoot" sequence? I gave a camera to my son once and forgot to explain this to him and he thought the camera was awful.

I found ".....for Dummies" to be a huge help when I got my first DSLR. It was much easier to follow than the manual that came with the camera.

At this point, no valid news source is saying he was muslim, only that some sources claiming to be ISIS are SAYING he had recently converted.

I went Nikon instead of Canon for one reason; I held comparable models in my hand and the Nikon simply felt better. That is a totally subjective assessment and I offer it not to push you toward Nikon but to encourage you to do some hands on research.

Is it just me, or is going on about how people "spray and pray" just another way to stroke your own ego. In Ansel Adam's day film was expensive, almost no one could afford to be profligate with film when one shot could cost almost as much as lunch. Then came the (relatively) cheap box cameras and roll film that were going to ruin photography because untalented people could take crappy pictures and keep them anyway. Now peple can take as many shots as they want to get one good one; what's wrong with that? I was at a family reunion a few weeks ago where there were sixty or seventy people; I was the one taking pictures of the event so I came home with about 80 shots, probably twenty of the group photo. I was standing in the middle of the group, firing the camera with a remote, so I couldn't see what I was getting but among the many shots there were at least a couple that showed every face. Spray and pray let me get the shot I wanted.

Your grasp of the technical obviously exceeds mine, all I was saying is that I did not "create" the pink effect in PP or by adjusting settings in the camera. I was shooting in the manual setting and adjusting ISO and exposure to get a decent image,
but the color rendering, with no coaxing from me, is what I saw in the sky.

This is the fallacy of SOOC Photography - your camera requires a white balance setting to (in camera) post process the output from your sensor into the JPG you published above.

If your white balance was in auto, then the camera attempted to force the colors to and average grey color and assumes that the light source is somewhere around 5000K. So if the camera tried to bring the blue sky towards grey, it would naturally also cast a color on the moon. With overcast skies, street lighting will add casts to the clouds - remember that modern street lighting is emission based lighting - not full spectrum. Even the new LED street lights have a peak at about 400 nm and a hump around 600nm.

The point being that it would be rare for a camera to produce a properly colored picture of the moon in the sky with the WB set to auto. The auto WB feature of your brain is far more accurate than the camera.
This is the fallacy of SOOC Photography - your cam... (show quote)

The color rendering in the pic is the same as what I saw, I didn't adjust the white balance or do any post processing color changes.

So, did the moon, the sun and the atmosphere work together to add the pink cast or was it the result of an artificial setting within your camera placed there by a Japanese programmer? What was your white balance set to?

Very nice shot. I do wish you had clicked the save original button; we could have seen more detail.

Taken around midnight. The light overcast didn't block the moon but put this pinkish tint on it.

Being new to photography and trying to capture the eclipse is about like being new to painting and trying to create the Mona Lisa. I've been shooting for almost sixty years and was much less than satisfied with my results. A difficult technical subject, an unusual and awe inspiring experience, and very limited time all add up to the most challenging situation I've ever shot in. A great experience that resulted in some pretty mediocre pictures.
And Welcome to the hog!

Beautiful! One other piece of important Portland Head Lighthouse history, my wife and I exchanged our vows there 43 years ago this month. :)
