So for my 30th birthday I received a Canon Rebel T6. It came with a telephoto lens, a macro, wide angle.....I mean, there's stuff I don't even know what the technical names of it are. I'll take my time learning the ins and outs of everything that came soon, but for now I just want to try out the zoom and focus around town for the day. So what are the basics of getting this damn thing to zoom properly and why does it keep wanting to tell me it won't focus? Lol......thanks for helping a lady out y'all. Haha

Consider attending a workshop in the basic operation of a DSLR camera. This workshop will give you both a foundation and confidence to build on.

I found a good online class on my T3i when I bought it a few years ago. Well worth what ever I paid for it. Done forgot. LOL.

Welcome to the 'Hog' Kate. get this book, you won't ever regret it and it will tell you all you need to know about your new camera. I'm a Canon shooter myself and have his books for all of my bodies.

Take a good look through the manual, and follow the various sections. Perhaps set the camera to P mode initially, and make sure the lens is set to AF (Auto focus). Good luck.

Y'all made my day by giving me feed back. Wasn't sure I would get any. :) I'm going to check out every suggestion! Thank you!

No feedback? Here???

The odds of that are between slim and none, and slim hasn't been seen in a long, long while...

Enjoy!

I found ".....for Dummies" to be a huge help when I got my first DSLR. It was much easier to follow than the manual that came with the camera.

Welcome. My first thought about the focus issue (tongue in cheek) was: Did you take off the lens cap? Enjoy!

You might consider this, on amazon.com for $23: https://www.amazon.com/Digital-Photography-Complete-Course-Taylor/dp/1465436073

I also really like Mike Browne's (free) videos, starting here: https://www.photographycourses.biz/cgi-bin/showpage.fcgi. Scroll down - his early videos (before he lost a lot of weight) are very short and while still informative, lack some of the wit of his more recent videos - he gets better with time.

Whatever you do, "make haste slowly..." Focus on learning one or two things at a time, each time you shoot, select your best and worst shots, then try to evaluate why there is a difference.

Are you trying to focus in low light

One other thing - train yourself to turn your camera off between shots. While your camera is rated for 450 shots per charge, it can be annoying if you're out for a couple hours and come up on something you want to shoot, only to find no juice left. I learned the hard way... If you're finding that you're consistently running low on power, consider a spare battery or two, and a charger.
