I use a nested system for subject and location. Since I do a lot of birds, it has really helped me to clean up the catalog. I can easily pull up all images of say a house finch. I find it easier to delete those that fall short of the top 5 or 6 images. Same for waterfalls/locations or other stuff I have shot many times over the the years. The family rarely wants to see all of something (finches etc.) but do like to see gatherings from the past...so that comes in handy too. And when a family member passes, it's easy to put together a memorial.

I would also look on FredMiranda. I got a nice used one there. Love my D5 for fast action!

Used them to calibrate the 150-600 to my D7100. Fast turn around and made a huge difference. I do my own calibrations these days for all my lens.

While the train trip north of Sault Ste. Marie to Agawa Canyon is very scenic with many opportunities for photos as is the highway 17 north that follows the lakeshore of Superior. But I'm afraid that for you Yanks this area is a No-No at this time. Because of the "Virus" the border between our common border is closed tight at the moment for all except essential travelers. And sight-seeing I'm afraid does not fit that description. The closure date was just extended to the 21st of September and considering what is going on in the USA with the virus I cannot see it opening at all til sometime in 2021 or until youse guys get it under control somewhat.
Sad but true but the 80% of the citizens of Canada at the present time do not want the border to open.
So, the UP is where you will be and there are many many excellent places along all the Great Lakes that will satisfy your cravings.

Cant blame you guys....it is a mess down here. But plenty to see in the UP.

While you're in that neck of the woods it's only a short hop to the Apostle Islands which my grad school roommate pointed me toward on my first trip to the UP by myself (I also got a Yooper keyholder which handily fits around my neck while I'm running errands so I don't have to worry about having all my keys so visible).

Can you share more about the Apostle Islands? Images? Accommodations? If none, best place to stay?

You are absolutely correct. Bond Falls is definitely worth the trip. In fact I took my avatar picture there. Had to walk with my gear about ten minutes mostly up hill to get to the best part of the falls but well worth it.

And the better shots will be on the right side as you walk up. Love da UP!

Howdy Hogs,
I have a D850 and have only used SD cards. Would like to purchase either an XQD or CFExpress card and see if I find it useful. I’m not certain the CFExpress is compatible.
Hoping for recommendations. I would most likely want 64 or 128gb.
Thank y’all for any help,
Matt

If you use a grip and EN-EL18 battery to get to 9 fps, you would want to use the XQD since they are faster. The higher fps is important for BIF and some types of wildlife activity.

Those are spectacular shots!

I have a question. If lighting triggers the shutter to open, it would seem like the lighting would be gone before the shutter has a chance to open? Of course the results say otherwise. Can you explain this?

Lightening triggers work by picking up an infrared signal that occurs before our eyes can see the lightening bolt. Sensitivity settings are about picking this up. I have captured some images via the bulb method. I've also set the camera to 15 to 20 second exposures on an interval. The triggers are great when they work. People who chase storms use them.

I have had 2 MIOPS triggers and neither have worked...the 2nd was a replacement from the company. Friends have had good success with The Lightening Trigger and Pluto. No idea why this happened for me.

In the suggestion category...think about shooting raw in the future. I think that would offer better rendering. I agree about the AI Denoise...always use this. Sharpen can be hit or miss but always worth a try.

It’s not necessarily an either/or proposition. I’ve found that if I’m really pushing ISO then sometimes I’ll use Denoise and Sharpen. Sharpen seems to sometimes just sharpen the noise if it’s more than the included denoise function can handle. I’ll run it through Denoise AI first and then try Sharpen AI.

This has worked for me too....ISO, ugh. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. The new low-light option has really helped in some cases as well. You always hope for the clean, sharp images but light and circumstances doesn't always offer that. Happy with the help when needed!
