Thanks, my thoughts exactly! Though you said it a lot nicer than I would have.

Here's another option:

http://www.borrowlenses.com/product/Tamron_18_270_CA

you can rent the lens for a few days for $26, or a full week for $38. That way you can try it out and see if you like it before you commit $400+ for it.

Jenni,
If you can afford it here is a great lens that will handle ALL of your needs.

http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-18-300mm-3-5-5-6G-AF-S-Nikkor/dp/B008B14VAK/ref=pd_sim_sbs_e_1

It looks like you can get it used for about $775. Pair it to a decent body like the D7000, get a tripod, and you can take great photos in just about any situation, not just sports!

Unfortunately the consumer-buying public has its fair share of "suckers". In addition to the professional suppliers the market place also has it's fair share of "shady dealers" who try to take advantage of "the suckers" !

Nowhere is this more evident than on the world wide web. The practice is widespread on eBay, and even Amazon don't seem to "police" the practice as strongly as they might.

This is a good lesson for you when price comparing. Always have a couple of known and reputable sites where you can get a good idea of the current retail market prices of the item you are looking at.

In the UK for cameras, for example, we have this site, which is updated continually. It's just about all they do ! Here's your D5100 :-

http://www.camerapricebuster.com/Nikon/Nikon-Digital-SLRs/Nikon-D5100-Lens-Kit-18-55mm-VR

And this is another excellent such site :-

http://www.pricerunner.co.uk/pli/29-2711229/Digital-Cameras/Nikon-D5100-18-55mm-VR-Compare-Prices

If you look towards the bottom of the Amazon.com description of the D60 you will see "6 new from $879" and "67 used from $199.95". I think that in itself tells you to be wary of having to pay $1049.99 ! Below that you'll see that "there is also a newer version of this camera, the D3100, at $446.95". A "newer version" at nearly 2.5 times less money ...... warning bells about the D60 !

Moral ? Know what product you are looking for. Know where to go to find the correct current retail price range. Then you will be sure to quickly discard the prices and suppliers about which you have posed your question.

I see from your self-intro that you are already the owner of the D5100. Happy for you ! And hope that your question has now been answered !

I didn't want anyone to think that I was considering buying a D60. I have the D5100 as you pointed out, but I have an acquaintance that has the D60, which I knew nothing about, so I started comparing her camera to mine. That's when I started scratching my head when I compared the specs then compared the prices. It doesn't make any sense!

So yeah, I'm glad I've got the D5100, I just thought I must be missing something when I looked at the D60 specs. I guess it's like you said, there's a sucker born every day, so caveat emptor indeed!

I myself tend to do a LOT of research before I make any purchasing decisions. I also read the reviews on dpreview and Amazon before deciding which items to buy.

So I'm gathering by the responses here that there is no reason for the D60 to be more expensive than the D5100, and that's what I figured. I bought my D5100 body used for only $325 and it looked and worked like brand new! Yeah I got a sweet deal! :-D

Looking at the first website you posted, it seems the best price for just a D5100 body is 275 British Pounds, which comes to $445. So my "like new" body for $325 (about 200 British Pounds) was a great deal!

Wow! Great (comprehensive) answer! Thank you. I love it when I ask two whole questions and get two whole answers.
If I may ask one more; for indoor ice hockey shots, is there a teleconverter you would suggest for my 70-200?

When you reply to someone I would suggest instead of clicking "reply" you click "Quote Reply" so we have some clue as to who you are replying to.

NO!

The numbers you repeated are the focal length of the lenses.
The larger the number, the more it magnifies.

The 'speed' is specified by the f number and it's reversed from what you would think. A smaller number lets more light in than a higher number.
Most people shooting action sports buy lenses with f number of 2.8 or smaller. And the smaller the number the more they cost.

I rented a Nikon D7100 with a 70-300 f 2.8 for shooting High School football under the lights. As with any higher level camera, it takes a while to get used to it and understand how to make it do what you want, but the images are pretty good.

As someone else mentioned, I would suggest you consider a Nikon D7000. It's an older version of the D7100.
Adorama (a very reputable dealer) has a kit with a 55-200mm lens for just over $1000, with a $200 rebate, putting it right in your range.
http://www.adorama.com/INKD7000L4.html

Whatever you end up purchasing, I *STRONGLY* recommend that you get some hands-on training on how to use your new camera. And how to deal with the images it makes.

I agree with the above (without reading the next 4 pages of responses first) but I would suggest instead of the 70-200 lens, get just the body for $684, then get a 70-300mm lens. If you're sitting in the bleachers and trying to take a photo of your son catching a fly ball in the outfield a 200mm lens isn't going to get you close enough. You'll be thankful if you have a lens with a higher powered zoom. Keep in mind that the more you zoom in the more you have to worry about vibrations, this is where having a lens with a wider maximum aperture comes in handy, because the wider you can open the aperture the faster shutter speed you can use, and the faster the shutter speed the better chance you have of getting a sharp photo. You also might look into a tripod to reduce vibration. Also lenses that have "VR" in the model # have vibration reduction built in.
So, to sum up, lots of zoom, large maximum aperture, vibration reduction built into the lens and a tripod. Don't worry about lighting. I've never seen a baseball game that didn't have a LOT of light! Hope this helps!

Hi guys,
I have posted this question in other places and have not yet been able to find anyone that can answer it.

If you look at the specs of the D5100 and compare them to the D60, the D5100 is seemingly a MUCH better camera! It does video, it has 16.2MP compared to 10MP, it has an articulating screen, etc. So why, when you compare the cost of the 2 cameras, is the D60 $450 more expensive? It doesn't make any sense!

The D5100 with just an 18-55mm kit lens is $599
http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-16-2MP-Digital-18-55mm-3-5-5-6/dp/B004V4IWKG/

The D60 with the exact same lens is $1049
http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-10-2MP-Digital-18-55mm-3-5-5-6G/dp/B0012OGF6Q

Can anyone please explain this madness?

Pretty cool. I was in a local brewpub a week or so ago when the Google guy was taking his photos so if you look for Bend Brewing Company in Bend, Oregon you will see me in one of their dining rooms. In fact while typing this I went to the website and found me inside the brewery with about a dozen friends. I'll attach the photo to this message. The faces are blurred out so you don't need to worry about having a nervous breakdown when you see my face, because you won't. LOL!
I'm the fat guy in the gray sweatshirt sitting at the top right corner of the table. :o)

Me at Bend Brewing Company when Google was doing their thing, I'm at rear right corner with the grey sweatshirt & ballcap.

I bought a 500mm fixed focal length lens for my Nikon D5100. The lens is made by Bower. Never heard of them before this but the reviews on Amazon were pretty good and the price was right so I decided to give it a shot. I also took photos of the moon one night here in Oregon when the moon was full. Mounted the lens (not the camera body) to a tripod and went in the back yard. Now keep in mind I have to manually focus this thing, in fact everything is done manually thought it seems the camera can adjust the exposure correctly even in fully manual mode. There is also another ring on this lens that I haven't quite figured out yet but it works kinda like the aperture. I guess you open this thing up so you can get as much light into the viewfinder as possible to assist in focusing then before you take the shot you close it back down (no, it's not the aperture, that has it's own dial) so I don't know where this was set when I was using this lens but I'm not really impressed with the sharpness of the shots. Granted it was breezy out and I didn't have anything to weigh down my tripod. Shutter speed was probably a couple of seconds. Anyway, this was just some experimentation and my first time using this new lens. If anyone is familiar with this brand of lens and has any tips for getting better shots please let me know.

Hi guys,
First day here. Thought I'd introduce myself. Recently upgraded my Nikon D40 to a D5100, kept my kit lenses and have added 2 new lenses since. Here's what I'm using.
Nikon D5100
Nikkor 18-55mm AF-S kit lens
Nikkor 55-200mm AF-S kit lens
Nikkor 70-300mm AF lens (have to manually focus this one, but it was only $100)
Bower 500mm lens (also only about $100, so don't expect much)
Took some full moon shots with the Bower, will post them in Moon Shots thread. I also have an SB-600, and a Macro Flash as well. 2 tripods, complete set of knockoffs of Cokin P-Type filters with 2 filter holders and hoods. Other assorted goodies such as a remote and a set of extension tubes for macro photography. Also have 2 photo tents, 19" and 30" for product still photography (I do a lot of eBay selling) and some lighting stuff. Not sure what else I need for now. I'd like to get into nature/landscape photography and maybe some macro stuff, bugs/flowers etc.
Anyway, glad to be here! 8-)
