After observing a quite embarrassing exchange with a brand new member who dared to pist some photographs in an introductory post here yesterday, I went on a search to find the actual posted written rules forbidding photographs in this forum. I looked in all obvious spots for a specific ruling. I intentionally omitted looking anywhere that required any level of mind reading or ExtraSensory Perception. I found nothing. Nada. Zilch.

In fact, in the rules for this section, the very first specific instruction I found covered not only "How to post a picture," but also how to "Store Original," in order to post it with higher resolution.

My intent here is not to pick a fight. I'm sure this post is well along a path of being moved. But if this forum is to survive, it is time to start focusing on what matters. Photograps are generally not evil on a photography forum.

Here's another worry as a result of 'using' AI, one that perhaps outweighs the threats to stuff like how it will affect photography and the like. An excellent speaker like most who do TED talks.

But Admin does often move posts to other sections. I made a post of an example of using generative fill, and Admin moved it to the photo gallery. Meanwhile, he doesn't seem to move posts about totally AI images. I wish there was more consistency.

Does it really matter that much to you. Seems most in this discussion are focused more more on the subject than where they are reading it. If you dont want to see it just click past it and move on.
I think its fascinating, whether its 100% photography or not. As someone pointed out, Photoshop already has an AI tool, tomorrow there may be 3, or heaven forbid 4 new AI tools. Are photographers going to stop using Photoshop or Lightroom. I think not. 'Purests' just won't use the tool, but I bet many won't be able to resist.

Nice capture Voss. Bit old for the 'playground' I would have thought. Beer, fag and a walking stick

Why on earth not? I've never used them. And why such vehement instructions with shouting for goodness sake?

If you see them on your camera screen or viewfinder, they are to help you compose the picture you are going to take.
If you see them during post processing on your computer, they are to help you again with cropping so you get a balanced result.
They can be turned off in your camera and also in your pp app.

A big problem with many of us 'seniors' is lack of activity. By the time we reach traditional bedtime, our bodies aren't tired enough. Our brains, perhaps stimulated by computer play and the bright screen, may be tired but are still fizzing with the mental stimulation.
I'm waiting for a double hip replacement and queried the fact with the doctor that since the discomfit etc (pain) has got worse, I seem to fall asleep pretty quick, even during the day but also at night.
I've been relatively inactive apparently, but the pain/aches are tiring the old body enough that its ready for a rest.
Ive also stopped using the computer and reading books on the ipad, for at least an hour before bed.
Am sleeping better now than I have for quite awhile, except when I get woken by turning over in bed and ending up in a bit of pain again. That wakes me up till I can get comfy again.

The simple answer to your question is yes. No matter what the AI haters think it won't be very long before most successful photographers will be using AI in some capacity. If you don't keep up you are likely to be out of work.

Remember the argument when people began switching from film to digital. Well, the vast majority of commercial photographers are now using digital. Not that you can't take great photos with film, but the ability to see exactly what you have taken immediately and to turn product around quickly for clients makes digital a no brainer for most professionals.

Well, like it or not, it won't be very long before most successful photographers will be using AI. Your example of chat bots is one clear way people will use AI, but there will be countless others, from using AI to remove unwanted objects to getting rid of noise, to generative fill, to replacing skies, and who knows what other uses.

Some may not like it, but AI is here to stay, and it won't be long before just about the only professional photographers who aren't using it will be journalists, and to be honest, don't be surprised it they aren't using it also, despite the ethical questions about that.

People can either learn to use AI, or they will be left behind.

You put that soooooo politely. Good on you, I guess, but I call a spade a spade. No patience for repeat offender idiots who are apparently exceptionally proud if their idiocy.

In answer to your title question: Not if you are a photographer and want to remain as such rather than a digital artist

I cant see how this relates to what is being asked.
I think you are being just a little bit provocative really.

I've been enjoying your work since you started messing with AI...you're getting better every project, so enjoy, and continue to produce art!

And I second that comment
When AI first reared its ugly head I thought 'never for me, the world and definitions of what we see and don't see are changing too quickly, its not right, it going to cause trouble'.
In one small respect, the pictures you are making curmudgeon and the enjoyment you are obviously getting from your efforts, have changed my opinion somewhat.
In every art form, regardless of how its created, it's beauty, or appeal is in the eye of the beholder.
People here debating the reference to what its going to be called, or not called, don't seem interested in 'art' per se. To me they are pretend technophobes, trying to sound informed and intelligent while chewing the end of their spectacles frame.
I for one have been fascinated by some of the work you have produced, carry on old chap. Ignore the naysayers.
