# 1 is great, and the rest are mediocre. And before you get huffy or hurt, look up what mediocre really means.

Thanks for looking and commenting.

With my eyesight, I'll take mediocre. But the problem with the others is background distractions, which can't be helped in auto.

frankraney - your photos are excellent from my point of view! I should do so well.
Since the heat and bright sunlight has returned for the year I may be taking a few photos myself, with my recently acquired Nikon D810, here in Fresno, in Clovis you are my neighbor almost. I am about a mile from the new Veterans Blvd access to 99.

Thank you Dean. I see and appreciate it. We are across town from each other. I'm at Clovis Ave and Sheppard.

Did anybody hear of an Aurora by Lake Erie, New York recently?
Did anyone take photos of it?

We just had one a few days ago and again last night here in Fresno CA. I didn't get out to shoot. It was visible about 40 miles from here. A friend of mine did shot it.

My iMac has developed storage problems. It is completely full and the iMac can no longer function well. I do not have the capacity to download any more photos until the problem is resolved. An hour on the telephone with Apple support determined that this problem requires a complete clear out of the computer and reload. My G-Tech backup external hard drive for the time machine has failed, so we cannot now back up the contents of the iMac. It may be a while before I am back.

What a bummer Mike. Good luck.

The true successful photographer knows what tools are available and which ones are needed for a particular assignment. I doubt award-winning and Pulitzer Prize photographers shooting for a top news agency are shooting RAW which has to be post-processed. Time is of the essence and a lot of the award-winning shots are on newsstands before a photographer can get back to home base to post-process the work.

A friend of mine is a sports pro photographer and only does jpeg, because his clients want the photos immediately.

I just watched a very good discussion about these methods of taking photos and I hope some of you will find this as interesting as I did. I think this will in most cases of shooting, change my way of setting the camera. I like the idea of CRAW -- compressed RAW files. I know the traditional responses will be from the (oh so sophisticated and utterly world-known photographers) that shooting in less than RAW is a travesty against photography and perhaps mankind itself, or those who think JPEG is best because no one is going to blow a photo up to 4' x 6' and having a dense RAW file is just a waste of pixels. Why not go middle ground? The video makes really good sense and even promotes JPEG as an acceptable mode in some cases. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the discussion.

As a bonus -- I've also included a second video by the same photographer you might also enjoy.

I just watched a very good discussion about these ... (show quote)

Your right. This is discussion has been around for a long time. Both formats have their place, and it is an individual need. And you can blow ajpeg up a LOT LARGER THAN 4X6.

Very nice set Frank
My vision has been on a down hill slide over the last 20 or so years, Because auto focus don't work well with macro or closeup I started using the view finder & manual focus, my method may sound silly! I focus for the sharpest blur, it don't work well for things were you need to change focus quickly but where you have time I think it's better than auto.
I know this will not work for everyone it may help some.

Thanks frank. It's my right eye that's bad, and cameras are right eyed. So I'm using live view. Sometimes they are blurry do the the mirror dropping down and back up.

If I could afford it, a mirrorless camera would help.
