It has been a major news item over much of the northern half of the country for the last day or so as a result of a huge solar storm. Where have you been?

I live about 20 miles south of Buffalo near Lake Erie. I got these shots Friday night at Sturgeon Point Marina. Nothing last night, too cloudy. Truly magical!

I was rather underwhelmed, here in NH. I expected shimmering curtains of color dancing across the sky but all I got was what looked like high thin clouds with a pink or green tint. Others in NH posted much more vivid scenes so I guess it was luck if the draw as to what you got.

Aurorae are quite variable. They range from active displays to just a solid color. There are accounts of fire brigades heading for Ancient Rome when a red aurora showed itself way back then.

Those colors are always present in the sky due to electrochemical reactions in the ionosphere (mostly oxygen and nitrogen). The normal condition at midlatitudes is that the colors are at about 1-10% of visual threshold so you don't notice them.
