Hahahaha....It must be contagious, I saw a teenager here last fall stuck in a baby swing. The fire fighters were there trying to free her.

Headline in today's paper -
"Kingston firefighters free two teens stuck in baby swings at Block Park"
"The post said firefighters were called to the park on Abeel Street for reports that two teenagers had got stuck in hard plastic baby-style swings intended only for small children."
DebAnn, thank you! I am going to check locally for a repair estimate. Other than that I've been a optical/mechanical engineer for the last 20 years, so not too afraid of this mechanism.

Yes I had this issue with mine. I had it fixed by a local camera repair service. Wasn't very expensive. But it's not something you can do yourself - unless you're a camera repairman!
Thank you!, I love that lens also. The crazy thing is It works from 105mm down to about 80mm then it craps out. I looked up a new ribbon cable, they run about $40+/-. I may just give it a try myself.

I'm glad you revived it (hopefully) long enough to continue your trip. I love that lens. Cheers.
Yep Tried that last night too.....not loose ...Thanks

I had a 24-70mm 2.8 doing that and sent it back to Canon for repairs. Check the screws on the ring where it connects to camera. My 100-400 does it every once in a while and the screws had loosen.
So first, thanks for all of your responses. I did last night play with the lens and settings. I switched from Auto-focus to manual and back again. I also switched from stabilization off and on again. After this maneuver I was able to take several shots without failure. I don't know if this is a permanent fix or not but maybe I can get through the trip.
Anyway thanks again!

They told me the obvious....send it in. Did I mention that I'm on the road looking for an easy fix?

Maybe ....and what did they tell you ??
is 1-800-OKCANON different from canon service? I have contacted Canon Service.
Hey All, I'm on the road and my 24-105 lens has crapped the bed. I get the dreaded Err01 which is a lens communication error. I managed to collect a few shots while in the "Antelope Canyon" by bumping and resetting the lens. And YES, I have cleaned several times the contacts in the camera and the lens. I have the 100-400 lens with me and it works just fine, but is too close (and heavy) for my needs. Is there any easy fix to this lens other than cleaning the contacts? .....P.S. O have contacted Canon and reviewed this, I have also checked local photography shops, F.B. Market place, craigslist, for alternatives. Any advise on a repair would be awesome.
Thanks in advance
