Ah, I see. I was at the Van Gough in Amsterdam - absolutely no photos. They did allow you to take one picture standing next to a large Vincent self-portrait. Such a shame because there are so many great pictures to take. The "Potato Eaters" was one I would have liked to have captured.

Bummer. I was there last September and shot away without any problems. No flash though. Such a great museum to take pictures.

An Olive store in southern Spain. I took a picture of the many shelves of olive oil and other products - apparently a no-no

Accademic Gallery, in Florence, at the statue of David. Shooting with my Nikon DSLR, no flash, guards descended on me and said no photography allowed. I pointed out the dozens of other folks surrounding the statue, shooting away with their cell phone cameras. Guards said that's OK, just no "Real cameras" allowed. Go figure!

At the Cirque du Soleil in Vegas at the MGM Grand, the MC announced that the performers were in need of cameras and would gladly take them. The performers patrol the seats before, during and after the show. I just had my little Sony W830 with me at the time, but it did flash.

The Biltmore house in Asheville NC. I didn't see the sign. Got some good shot though.

Hmmm. I shot there with no problems. ~1960s.

Not long after 9/11 I took some pictures in a park that was right next to Kansas City's "twin towers". The local police stopped me at a convenience store nearby saying a security officer had called them about me. It was because I am a Sikh and wear a turban in public. They checked my ID and blew the complaint off. But, the next day the FBI showed up at my place of work, tossed my disabled boss out of her office to interview me for half an hour. They were satisfied with a copy of my pictures for that day. I am also a yoga teacher and one of the agents had actually taken a class from me 10 years before!

I think they got more restrictive in recent years.
I have indoor shots from the mid 80's, but on a trip a few years ago, no indoor photography.
Maybe they wanted to sell more postcards.

A Washington D.C. hotel lounge (Can't recall name of hotel.) Was with a group and needed pics of their activities. Set up a very small Kodak 828 folding camera (no more than 3-inches high) on a table in darkened room during floor show, took one shot, got tap on the shoulder and a whispered "Don't do that."

I have had many experiences wherein I did not photograph because of the notices but one situation has always confused me a bit: historic places that don't want you to shot because they think they need to sell you their photos. Most of the time I don't buy their stuff; I just wanted to record my own impressions of the place. Why not sell me a time/dated permit to photograph, sans flash of course, and just let me bang away for the duration of my permit?
