I "upgraded" my 60mm Af-d to a 60mm G, I can't say it was a flat out mistake, I can't justify owning both, but I could easily slip a 60mm Af-d back in my collection, as long as I'm not asked to explain why I have two 60mm micros!

I sold mine for $225. Stupid stupid stupid.

Optically, the differences are negligible. Where they come in are in added features, build quality & resale value.

The differences will be in the IS/VR/OS at macro ranges - this is a prime requisite for the OP !

and, is also why I mention the CANON L macro ....

Easily replaced by using additional lighting at a lower cost

That's true but lets not forget that a macro lens can certainly serve more than one purpose.

Nikon 105 would be good for your camera. However if you don't want to spend extra bucks on the NIkon, I would suggest the Tamron 105 of 90 mm. Both have VC.

You might look into the Nikon 60mm f2.8D lens. For a crop sensor camera, it's a great macro lens as well as a great portrait lens. They're well made (metal body - made in Japan) and you can get them on eBay for around $300...

Def checking that out -- thanks!

You can adjust the power of the flash to add more ambient lighting if desired. All of the macro images on my Flickr stream have additional lighting and many have ambient illumination as well.

In my case, I have enough other lenses that they don’t need to do double duty. That said, not everyone may have the same selection to choose from. I normally have multiple cameras with different purpose lenses mounted.

I know, you have a huge vintage collection. I am a big fan of flash in macro but I am also a fan of natural light, if I can get away with it I would go with natural light because of the quality of background, with flash it is often not the same. I also am with you that the biggest thing that a macro shooter can do to improve his images is get a good flash solution because of its ability to freeze motion, I actually use an articulating arm for my flash to get it out to the end of the lens so that I can set power levels as low as I can on the flash, I love it when I can get down to 1/16th flash power. I often shoot with shutter speeds below 1/200th. The below image was shot with a 180mm macro lens at full 1:1 reproduction at 1/30th second hand held, would have been impossible without flash.

What if you want ALL ambient lighting ?? IS would be GOOD for that - wouldn't it ??

IS helps with your movement, thus it will help if your subject is stationary. What about if your subject is mobile ? When it comes down to it, it all depends on shooting circumstances.

I would like to start taking close up pictures of flowers. I mean super-close up. I have a Nikon D5500 and would like suggestions on what lens to purchase. I think I need VR and do not want to use a tripod. Manual focusing is fine. I'm thinking of purchasing the Nikon 100mm or the 90 mm Tamron with VC. Anyone have any good recommendations? Thank you!
