I just bought from Adorama a Nikon 105 f 2.8 AF D lens. My photo buddy has a Canon with the Tamron 90 F 2.8. He has some outstanding pictures.

Get a full frame lens, so if in the future you get into full frame photography, you don't have to reinvest into glass. I have Nikon D90 and use old Nikon 60mm - 2.8 macro; works like 90 mm on my camera. It's a very crisp old lens, I bought it used from Cameta about ten yrs ago and I also get good portraits with that lens. It was under $400 if not mistaken and it has auto focus but no VR. Hope this helps.

Hopefully not off topic! I use my Wonderful Minolta Af f2.8 100mm macro lens on my Sony a77ii. What would be the focal length on the cropped sensor?

Same focal length. Only change would be a different angle of view...
