Yes. It's entirely up to the states. What state is NOT going to collect sales tax if it's a choice?

Andy

States where people are not fleeing in droves, but rather moving too.... Like Florida.

Who cares?

Think that came about with the Amazon decision.
If a company has a physical presence in the state where the purchase is made then online orders must be assessed at least state taxes.

Nope, South Dakota v Wayfair is the relevant case here.

So I assume instead of paying the rate required by law on your income taxes you go ahead and bump it up to the maximum rate. I say this only because you are calling someone who pays only what is required by law a freeloader.

You are missing the point. In most states with a sales tax, the user of the product is legally required to pay a sales or use tax on the product. Retailers make this easier for you by charging it and remitting it to the state, but if you buy from a retailer that does not do so, you are legally required to remit the tax. If your don’t, you are not paying what is required by law, hence a freeloader - in other words, a bum.

Amazon has been assessing sales taxes in California for a long time as they have a physical presence in CA with tons of warehouses.

No. The freeloaders reap the benefit of those who pay taxes.

I don't think freeloading has anything to do with it. Just because you are in the financial position and search out the highest price to pay for a product, doesn't mean those with a budget who desire the most for their dollar, have to do the same. I am sure you don't shop for the best price on automobiles as well, but it makes a big difference to others.

I live in a state with no sales or income tax. We also have crumbling roads and infrastructure, generally poor schools except in the most affluent communities, and poor public services. Not to mention some of the highest property tax rates in the nation - which have a higher impact on the elderly and those on fixed incomes. Although we continually vote down broad based taxes, the support for them has been growing - mostly FROM those newcomers who are used to better schools, roads, and services.

Meanwhile, our neighbor Massachusetts has a higher net in-migration rate, despite its reputation (partly deserved) as "Taxachusetts".

Seems illogical, but them's the facts.

I was going to buy about $1500.00 worth of gear from B&H, but after seeing that high sales tax charge, I decided to wait. After waiting and thinking about it, I decided maybe I didn't really need to buy anything, and emptied my shopping cart.

I hope that in the long run, collecting sales tax from out-of-state vendors will help retain the few remaining local camera shops. Perhaps a bold few will even open new ones???

I understand where you are coming from but my local camera shop has advised me on more then one occasion to order from B&H. Seems about the only thing that this store wants to sell is cameras and lenses. Other things that you may need or want, cleaning solution, swabs, and etc. are not carried. The days of the small camera shops are over. They just can't carry all the inventory and I do understand that. I worked in a great camera store, film, back in the late 60's. When you came in you knew that it was a camera store, you could smell it. As to the states wanting (their) money, I question that. When I quit my business the state of WA. continued to bill me personal property tax for three years after I closed. They wanted to know the names of anyone I sold my equipment to so that they could then tax them. It took my accountant three years to write off all of my gear. I don't like what the money collected is spent on. Yes I vote but it doesn't seem to make any difference.

Yes, this was one of the reasons I decided to change from DSLR to mirrorless last month. It saved me a bit on a pretty expensive purchase.

Really??? You make decisions on which camera technology to buy based on sales tax law?
