You'll get lots of preferences from the various responders, but I did the same cruise a couple of years ago and took my Nikon D7100 and Tamron 16-300 as my only lens. It worked great.

My answer is different from anyone else.
Personally I have and use a Sony RX-10 IV.
Take the time to look into it.
I also bought a book from Gary L. Friedman which helped me imencemently.

I know that I will get called down here, but I have found that it covered just about every condition that I encounted when I went to Switzerland last year.
Just give the spects. a look-see.

If I could afford that camera, I'd likely have it as my only camera, just based on what everyone says about it.

I did that cruise many years ago on a Navy destroyer. The river is absolutely beautiful. Plan on spending a lot of time outdoors enjoying it.

We're looking forward to it.

Well, and I wouldn't rent the same kind of camera I don't want to take with me in the first place. That's why I specified that I'm looking at compact cameras, not mirrorless or DSLR's.

You've probably already heard this by now but I'd go with the Sony RX100 VI, same 1" sensor camera as the RX10 but only zooms to 200mm however, using CIZ will get you 400mm with virtually no quality loss. To easily compare cameras extensively: https://www.dpreview.com/products/compare/cameras

I've been looking at that one, as well, but will probably pass on it due to the pricepoint.

I recommend one camera and one lens. Your Sony camera is not a large camera and it has very good iq, so I would not go with a smaller sensor camera as you will lose iq.

I know I've posted before that we're going on a cruise in October, up the east coast from Boston, terminating at Montreal. I don't want to lug my A6300 and lenses, at the same time not wanting to mark myself as a potential victim of theft by the camera slung over my shoulder. So here's the dilemma: What do you veteran cruisers recommend for a compact travel camera? (yes I asked before). Is 200mm enough zoom or should I look at something longer. Something longer would have the 1/2.3" sensor in order to get the reach, but I could get 200--250mm zoom and a 1" sensor in a compact. This is driving me crazy. I've done enough researching online to know the strengths and weaknesses of both, but I'd love a good recommendation, as I have no idea of what is adequate for this, not having done a cruise before. Thanks for your indulgence and patience with me.

I would say 24-70mm always, and maybe a longer lens. This photo is from a similar cruise. 400mm equiv lens on a micro 4/3 camera.

If you are just looking for images to remember the trip by, then just use a cell phone. If you think you are going to get photos that might be award winning, or some that you might want printed to hang on your wall, bring your good camera and a couple of lenses to cover the gammot of focal lengths.

Not knowing anything about your health or agility the word 'lug' does not seem to apply to the 6300. Took mine and the Sony 18-135 (27-205) on a cruise in 2018 and it hardly, if ever, came off the camera. Most places we went off the ship we were in daylight and among a good number of people. The camera around my neck, at my side, was not a problem.

The point of this response however, is the lens camera-combination...superb!!! Some low light, wide open, hand held shots I could not believe. From the ships rail in the pre-dawn dark at 5AM, in the ancient structures at noon, in the low light jazz show lounge at 10PM It was always up for the task. Can send examples if you wish. Enjoy the cruise, take the 6300 and a good lens and enjoy the photographic memories in their full glory.

It is a bit steep and unfortunately the earlier models only go to 24-70 or 140 with CIZ
but they sure are small and easily concealed as well as turning out a good image. The resale is also high so it might be possible to buy one and sell it when it has served its purpose to recoup much of the initial cost. Just a thought. Decisions, decisions, huh? It never stops with this stuff.

Check out the Panasonic ZS-70. It's a Pro Point and Shoot. Small, compact, but a lot of DSLR features and capability. Smaller sensor, but gets great shots. 30x zoom. Not that expensive.

I lead tours of people off cruise ships in Juneau, Alaska. A few times every week, when things in front of us are amazing or spectacular, a guest will say to me “I wish I had brought my good camera.” What! You left your good camera at home and went on a cruise, I don’t say to them. I will never understand this.
You don’t need all your gear but take the best you’ve got. When you get ready to get off the ship each day, pick up the camera first then decide if you want to carry anything else. You can travel light and safe and still carry your best. You don’t want to regret not having it.

Carry your gear in a old beat up pack. Don’t use a strap with a brand logo and find one with a metal cable in it. These may discouraged anyone from stealing.

Thanks. If I decide to take that camera, maybe I'll get either the Sony 18-135 or 18-200, although I understand the Tamron 18-200 in Sony E mount may be a better lens than the Sony one.

I have the Tamron. I don't know if it's better than the silver version of the Sony but it's cheaper and ideal for travel photography. The Sigma 30mm f/1.4 or f/2.8 might be a nice compact prime to supplement the zoom if you wanted to take a prime along. The f/2.8 is really sharp and weighs only 5oz and makes the a6300 very compact.
