Great shots in my opinion. Especially the Whooping crane. I've been trying to get one of those for years.
Thanks! I took them at Brownstown, Indiana yesterday.

Great shots Richard, A couple of things hit me:
1) 2500 was the ISO identified on the second image. Is there a history
of high noise on your D850 at that ISO range? On my D7500, I don't
get significant noise at ISO 2500
2) EXIF data shows on the second shot that it was shot at 800 mm.
How far away were the birds, and how much cropping did you use?
3) Your info shows you are in Indidana... did you take these images in
the state, and if so, where???
I guess when I looked closely at the images, I did not so much see noise as a very shallow DOF with an already "dim" background" that just bled off into a dull bokeh. But that is what my untrained eye saw. Others may see it differently.
Thanks

First of all, thanks for viewing and comment!
The answer to your questions:
1. I do not seen problem at ISO 2500 with my D850. But still, I would like to have less than ISO 2000 or even less in order to avoid grainy problem when blow up.
2. The birds were not far at all. Hard to guess on the field. But they were fairly close, maybe 100 yards. I sit in my SUV all time during photograph. I did not do much crop except for adjustment slightly for the composition if possible. The light was not good yesterday. Otherwise, the photos would be clearer.
3. Yes, they were taken at Brownstown, Indiana. I went there yesterday. I went to the location I knew last year. Later yesterday, I found second location in the area. A) First location: Only in the early morning, you can see many probably over thousands of birds. Starting from late morning, they flew away. Direction: Drive eastward on state road 50 at the cross section with State Rd 135 (on the right) and S Depot St (on the left), turn left on to S Depot st. Please note there is a gas station at this cross section. Drive on the Depot St northward to W. Spring St and turn left to W. Spring St. Continue to Ewing Rd (same road, just change name). You will pass railway road. Continue to Y section of the road. Stay at left and continue about 1 mile, you will see many birds at both sides. B) Second location: Go back to State Rd 50 but this time westward. Drive until road 235. Turn left to road 235, drive about 4 miles to a small-town called Medora. Just after passing this town, there is a gas station and T junction. At T junction, turn left, just drive 1-2 minutes, you will see many birds at left. You may see many birds at left just before reaching Medora.
You may see some birds or many along both side of state road 50 when close to Brownstown but hard to park car to take photographs.
Let me know if you have question to find the locations. Hope this helps. Thanks!

Great shots..... Never make an excuse for a good photos. We do what we have to do to get the shot...... Thanks for sharing.
Have you ever been over to Goose Pond (Greene County)? There should be a boatload of them and other birds passing through.

Thanks, Graveman! Yes, I have been to Goose Pond every year for last few years. Id di not see many sandhill cranes last year. So I was told Brownstown, IN. It is easier to take photos of sandhill cranes in Brownstown. There were lot of pelicans in Goose pond late Feb to March in last few years when I went there. Thanks!
