Nikon through its resellers is now offering a $200 discount on the D850.
Either that means sales are slowing and they're trying to boost them, OR, they're coming out with another improved body, OR they're refocussing on the mirrorless market.

I've had my eye on the D850 since it was introduced (I am a D750 shooter). Should I go for the discounted price, which is still over $3K, or sit on my hordes of easily earned cash to see what's the next great thing?

My guess is that the next great thing will be a while. It could be a temporary discount so if you want one you should get it. I am not saying that there won't be further discount in the future.

Periodic sales. I have the D850 and love. If you wait for the next camera you won't get it because they will release another one after that. Do you get a new car now or wait for the newer model? Wait, they have a newer one next year.

I bought my 850 over one year ago and was offered a Sony 64 GB XQD card and a Sony XQD/SD Card Reader ($170.00 combined value) for placing the order with an authorized dealer. It looks like you are being offered a $30.00 discount over the prior years offering rather than a $200.00 discount. Just my thoughts.

I'm a 750 shooter too and really want that 850 or a Z7 w/ 2 card slots and better auto focus, but I'm not quite ready with the cash. This might be another way to look at it: let's say in 10 months they drop the price by $600. That's a $400 net over what you could get now. If you waited and bought and were asked then if would you pay $400 for that 10 months (or any arbitrary time) to have had the 850 for that period. What would your answer be? My answer would probably be that I would buy that time for $400, but I'm not really ready just yet.

I actually think the price will come down, but very slowly because they are going to invest all their energy in the mirrorless space. I'm pretty sure I will buy the 850 eventually because the next upgrade to the Z7 is probably going to be ridiculously expensive.

The D850 has been out for about 18 months. Don't know about others, but I am beginning to see them sitting on dealers' shelves, indicating that the initial purchase frenzy is just about over. So I suspect this is the same sort of periodic sale that we see occasionally that are designed to renew interest in various camera models. Future pricing strategy is anyone's guess, but my opinion is that we should not be looking for any big near-term drop in the price of the D850. The Z7 is already priced significantly (about 10%) above the D850 for a camera that is known as being "about 80% of a D850" (my own local dealer's words when showing me the Z7 that he had on the shelf). Any reduction in D850 price would in turn put pressure on Z7 (and Z6) pricing. I doubt that NikonUSA is interested in doing that, at least not just yet.

D850s have been on allocation for so long, I bet production has finally caught up and surpassed sales. A Senior Salaryman in Japan blinked at the worldwide inventory on hand and authorized a discount to move product.

Wait for the mirrorless.
And better to sell the lenses as well and switch to Canon. They are more committed and are not likely to go out of business in the coming years - like Nikon.

I suspect the discount is because of Nikon's two new mirrorless cameras released, the Z6 and Z7. And the rumor that the new D760 is to be released after June 30, 2019. Since the D850 was a celebration of Nikon's 100th Anniversary. The excitement over it is decreasing, just like the D500, which was released 20 months ago. Nikon has no crop sensor camera projected, as yet, to replace the D500. It could be another year. Or two? And it will be lesser expensive even more.

Nikon puts most of there equipment on sale from time to time. There is nothing wrong with the D850. It is just a sales promotion. Personally I would wait until they throw in the vertical grip for free, which they do from time to time.

Hmmm. "...hordes of easily earned cash..." Let me see if I can locate you on my family tree.

You shoot a D750. Nice camera, but the D850 represents a substantial step up in several ways. I have one. Love it. Mine was a step up from a D800 and the improved image detail is significant. Do what you think you ought to do, but there are images out there waiting for you while you dawdle.
