Wow I want to respond to a number of you. To set the stage, 1) I am retired; 2) I dumped a D90, D7000, and D610 (amazing what oil spots on a D600 can do for you) to set myself up for the 850; BUT a week long birthday party for my wife in Southern Cal (we live in MD) as well as a trip to South Africa and Dubai burnt my stash. I can hear you weeping for me . I’ll make it worse. I said I own a 750, but I also own a D500. Now, User ID, the willingness to pay for the time waiting up to a point would always be “yes”. repleo, I agree, a pro buys based on need, and should. The rest of us don’t NEED a camera at all. We do it for fun. I certinaly do. Stroday , you are my idol (850 and 500). Feiertag, Life is short, the question is not “do you need it to do something your current gear won’t”, UNLESS YOU ARE A PRO. The question is do you want it and can you swing it financially. If the answer is yes to those 2, go for it. I can’t sing (can’t find the bucket), I can’t paint, or sculpt. I have this creative urge and a camera is my brush and my canvas. As soon as I can swing it, I’ll own that 850. I love the picture I took of the mosque in Dubai with my D750 and 24-120. As I and others said, do it for FUN. Need is not in this space, unless you are a pro.

Ask yourself, what do I want to do that I can't
with the camera that I've got now? What is
missing in my photos? ........

When I answer your two questions the
answers that come up are "not much",
and "not a damnt thing". I don't NEED
any upgrades. On the contrary I realize
that my "Goldilocks" cameras are "just
right", but are discontinued models ...
so I acquire identical back ups ! FWIW,
the resulting 4 pairs of identical twins
happen to be 2 Sony models and 2 by
Panasonic.

I don't claim 100% perfect immunity
from temptation. I did spring for just
one very recent "Super Camera". I'm
only human, and all my bills are paid
up with some sheckels to spare. So, I
can occasionally be good to me for no
special reason :-)

Nikon through its resellers is now offering a $200 discount on the D850.
Either that means sales are slowing and they're trying to boost them, OR, they're coming out with another improved body, OR they're refocussing on the mirrorless market.

I've had my eye on the D850 since it was introduced (I am a D750 shooter). Should I go for the discounted price, which is still over $3K, or sit on my hordes of easily earned cash to see what's the next great thing?

surprised scrolling down and skimming all other replies that no one mentioned D6 coming out soon ? (Nikon website mentions it).

It is so satisfying to carefully set up a shot and take it with equipment you know will capture the essence of your subject. It is so satisfying to improve the shot in PP then share it with family, friends, forums or clients. More importantly, to enjoy your own work and keep improving.

Norm, Still sitting on our own hordes of easily earned currency. Easy come easy go, let your conscience and wife guide your GAS. It's only still over $3K, but bet they'll come down in a year, two, three or so:)

After too many years of being a gear whore (and retiring ='s less $) I can only wish the lottery would come my way. So, after reviewing Nikons D700 thru the D850 series with a number of examples by more than a few friends, funny.. how most all of the group, preferred the D700 examples. Go figure.
If I'm needing to use something with more resolution than the D700, I'll be renting until my ship comes in.

For sure it will take more than "pocketchange" (sorry) to buy a D850. But the D700 was-and-still-is a great little camera. Some of my favorite shots were from a D700. I now have a D850 and I do hope that your "ship" doesn't tarry too long. Done properly, images from a D850 are noticeably crisper and snappier (sounds like a Dorito) than from the venerable D700.

Just wondering, Alan ... have we seen "the picture [you] took of the mosque in Dubai"? I'd like to.

I rather doubt that an 860 is coming any time soon. I predict the DSLR has reached its ultimate zenith and improved versions will be sacrificed to the mirrorless line of Nikons, where there is a lot of room for improvement. The next "PRO" Nikon will be a mirrorless!

Actually the D6 (a 24 MP BSI DSLR) is rumored to be coming soon.

But I agree they really do need to catch up and improve on the Z6/7 designs rather quickly...

Being a cowardly amateur I almost never post a picture in a public forum. You are making me brave.

Spread your wings, Grasshopper. This is really nice. Don't forget to check the "store original" box when you post.
