If it were based on need, I'd still be shooting with my D200 and 18-70mm variable aperture zoom. They still work perfectly and capture very nice photographs of my family, railroad subjects, and landscapes. But I am sure having a lot of fun with my newer full frame cameras and lenses. The night sky images, landscape panoramas, and other images that I can capture now are great, and I am having a lot of fun doing all of it. But there is no need anywhere in sight. for these new things.

There you go. You needed one to take better images.

To quote Poor Richard, “Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and a terrible bore”.

I'm a 750 shooter too and really want that 850 or a Z7 w/ 2 card slots and better auto focus, but I'm not quite ready with the cash. This might be another way to look at it: let's say in 10 months they drop the price by $600. That's a $400 net over what you could get now. If you waited and bought and were asked then if would you pay $400 for that 10 months (or any arbitrary time) to have had the 850 for that period. What would your answer be? My answer would probably be that I would buy that time for $400, but I'm not really ready just yet.

I actually think the price will come down, but very slowly because they are going to invest all their energy in the mirrorless space. I'm pretty sure I will buy the 850 eventually because the next upgrade to the Z7 is probably going to be ridiculously expensive.

I see what you mean about money vs time spent waiting
for a better price. It's kinda like you've rented the camera
for 10 months while waiting for a price drop. Kinda like a
"rent-to-own" finance scheme where part of the rent is a
down payment on a possible future buy out.

Taking the figures you used [no special reason], it's $400
for 10 month rental. Is it worth it ? If while you're waiting
you don't have a really decent camera yet, then maybe so.

But if you already have a D750, maybe NOT. In the former
case, you're renting a full upgrade to a real camera. But in
the latter case you're renting only certain improvements
to your already capable camera-in-hand. Same $400 but a
less rewarding "return on investment" in the latter case.

Buy it now. In a couple years if you find something else, sell the 850 system and move up since you have the money. If you aren't really flush, hold the 850 for 5 years or so and move on to whatever else that may suit your fancy.

Hello. I have both a D750 and D810. The D810 camera is a major step up from the D750 and is more of a pro level camera. The D850 is another step up from the D810. There are significant differences from the D850 and the D810. You can look at cameracompare for the specifics. I love my D810 and would love to have a D850. Why would you want to wait? You are missing out on what is imho, a terrific camera! Good luck with your decision.

Nah...this is a hobby for most of us. Need is probably unprovable. Want and affordability are sufficient.

or sit on my hordes of easily earned cash to see what's the next great thing?[/quote]

There will always be a next great thing. If you get the D850, there will be a next great thingsoon, and you will be wondering if you should get it. And then it will be replaced by another next great thing. It will go on for the rest of your life.

Ask yourself, what do I want to do that I can't with the camera that I've got now? What is missing in my photos? Chances are you can learn more and practice, and keep the money. Trust me, some day you will be retired, and you might very well regret not having the money.

Nikon through its resellers is now offering a $200 discount on the D850.
Either that means sales are slowing and they're trying to boost them, OR, they're coming out with another improved body, OR they're refocussing on the mirrorless market.

I've had my eye on the D850 since it was introduced (I am a D750 shooter). Should I go for the discounted price, which is still over $3K, or sit on my hordes of easily earned cash to see what's the next great thing?

Oh I am jealous that u r able to afford the D850, maybe in my next life.

After too many years of being a gear whore (and retiring ='s less $) I can only wish the lottery would come my way. So, after reviewing Nikons D700 thru the D850 series with a number of examples by more than a few friends, funny.. how most all of the group, preferred the D700 examples. Go figure.
If I'm needing to use something with more resolution than the D700, I'll be renting until my ship comes in.

Get the D850. There will always be a new gee-whizz-bang new camera coming out, usually after you buy something.

Have both a D850 and D500. It is amazing to have 2 cameras that are complimentary with the exact same controls. Buy the D850, arguably one of the best mid size FF dslrs ever built, then keep an eye out for a used D500. Arguably one of the best APS-C camera ever built. You will be very happy with the pair for quite a while.

What does 'need' have to do with anything. Who 'needs' a camera unless you are one of those folks who calls yourself a 'Pro' because you can't find a real job.
