I talked with the Canon Techs today and they said my T5i was 'sick' so it is on its way to them for an estimate. I hope it is at least less than the current value of the camera!
I also verified that they have indeed quit repairing the T4i as was mentioned by Marj - but they are still doing work on the T5i.
Thanks for the advice everyone

Don't authorize anyone to make repairs before you
get a written quote. If you only get a 6-month
warranty on a repair, consider whether you should be
buying another used one for roughly the same cost
($350 online today), that probably never exhibited
a problem and has a 6-month warranty from many
used resellers.
Amen that.
My short version is: Only repair unique
or unusual camera for which no current
model is a proper replacement for your
purposes .... OR some rather expensive
camera where repair is far more budget
wise than replacement. PERIOD."
Example: I paid $400 for a used Lumix
GM5, very tiny full featured m4/3 body.
I have diligently shopped for a back up
cuz I really treasure this little gem and
you simply cannot find them. I was very
lucky to get just this one ! So, yes I can
see paying up to $400 for repairs [if not
due to traumatic impact or drowning].
Doesn't matter, to me, if others admire
my little gem or if they laff at it. Cuz it's
MY $400 ;-)
