so, I stumble across this ad. It says the lens is in not good shape. If I send it to Canon, 1.) has anyone had Canon bring a lens back from the grave. 2.) does anyone have a ballpark on the cost.
Canon USA Service Dept. will not even accept or work on the original EF 300mm f/2.8L USM (non-IS version, 1987-1999)
They also won't work on the EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM (1999-2011). They sent notice discontinuing work on it about a year ago.
Those models are deemed "too old" and parts supplies have largely been exhausted (more-so for the older, non-IS version, I'm sure).
They only service the current models:
EF 300mm f/4L IS USM and EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM "II".
It may be possible to get repairs done elsewhere, at independent repair shops. Whether or not they will be able to make repairs depends upon what's needed. Replacement parts are scarce or unavailable, if needed.

Thought it might be useful … thanks, User ID …
I paid $1600 for a pretty flawless version from a credible seller two years ago and love it. But $1000 for a flawed version? Nah.
