so, I stumble across this ad. It says the lens is in not good shape. If I send it to Canon, 1.) has anyone had Canon bring a lens back from the grave. 2.) does anyone have a ballpark on the cost.

Why would you want to throw away over 1,000 on a questionable lens? Not like it was given to you for free. I would not waste my time on something like that.

Need a lot more information.
On the face of it that is pretty low if an EF lens.
For a FD lens that is too high.

Way Too High priced...

I recently purchased the 300mm f/2.8 L IS for #1800 in pristine condition. A non IS lens in perfect condition would be about what you are quoting.

You will have way too much invested after repairs for sure...

You don't have to run nothing will hurt you. Just passed the offer. I am extremely afraid of sending stuff to manufacturers for repair as the cost too high, they might not even fix it right etc... So why buy something you are sure you have to send it for repair?

Canon does not possess the magic you describe, no one does. PARTS will be your biggest concern, if they exist. I have the original EF500mm f/4.5. Finding a 48mm drop-in CPL was very difficult. Canon told me how few parts they actually have for that model lens, not many. I took a chance and you will be doing the same. My 500 was in pristine condition so it was easier than if not. Another way of asking your second question might be "Do you walk to work or carry your lunch?" It is an unanswerable question unless "maybe" is what you want to hear.

I bought three lenses that were damaged goods and took it to a technician in town who was able to resurrect them and it worked perfectly now but I warn you you run the risk of not getting your money back if it cost $1000 that lens better cost new 8000 it’s best to spend $300 on the lens and if it doesn’t work sell off as parts good luck

Keith - just FYI - the Canon EF 300L f4 IS USM sells for $1349 (list) currently …
whilst the Canon EF 300L f2.8 IS II USM goes for a whopping $6,099 (list) !!!!!!

Does that make your choice as to what to do - easier?

Turned down a decent one
recently for $600 cuz I did
not wanna lug it around. I
cannot imagine buying the
deal that you found. Don't
lose any sleep over it. Just
not feeling the TGTBT of it.

Plus I do have a 300/4.5
Nikkor and that will hafta
do. Half the weight of the
Canon 2.8 !
