I purchased my 40D used with less than 1,000 shutter counts for $250. (I totally lucked out on that one).

Darn it Chuck! I was just about to sell him a ton of old cameras. But seriously if anyone want film cameras I get a lot of them going through the auction some go for $10 or even less. Let me know what you are looking for. Of course if you just say old 35 mm I probably have about 10 here now.

Sorry to rain on your parade, grasshopper. My advice is based on a lifetime of experience, which has turned me into a true cynic, as defined by Ambrose Bearse: someone who suffers from that defect of vision which causes them to see things as they are, instead of as they would wish them to be.

The advice to start out with an older, film camera is absolutely bogus. This would be like learning to be an auto mechanic by mastering steam engine technology.

The development of any ability involves lots of practice, and unless you have lots of money for film processing, and lots of patience to deal with the time between pressing the shutter release and seeing the photo you just took, film is not the way to go.

morning chuck...
glad to see you on less bit of a tare..

if you read all this thread, you would know--rural area,no stores, small town/village/etc..I know alaska[few years back],and if your not in fairbanks/jueau/anchorage,you aint got much...

Joe I can't predict what cameras are coming through here. Because we get so little for them at auction, I put aside some for sale on Ebay. I often get a ball park figure from B&H and Adorama as to the selling price and try to get about half of what they would sell it for. I give a lot of them to a local guy who tries to sell on Ebay. (he lost his job) . Right now I have an 80-200 zoom 62 mm 1:4.5 Ome8 1R that judging by the position of the electrical connectors should fit a Mamyia 645. A Minolta Maxium 400 SL a Maxium 7000 Canon A1 with a broken battery door. a Pentex PZ70 A Sony 350 (screen in back is shot but camera works) A Maxium 7XI with a 28-300 77mm lens (the lens only seems to work in manual it sticks going in and out if you try automatic) and a Mamiya C3. There are always film camera going in and out along with a number of point and shoots and a few older digitals. Obviously the Mamya C3 is going to be more than $10. But you can always leave a bid.

Actually the name covers a lot of ground. In a general sense it means teacher or simply one who has gone before. I started martial arts in 1949 . so yes. But I was also a university professor, that dabbled in a number of other areas, and disciplines both in the US and abroad. birdtownusa is handling the sale of a Nikon F2 and assorted lenses on ebay I don't know if he has them up yet. the Mamima and some of the other things are sitting her in the office. Along with a Bronica and a number of lens and backs. Usually we can't get pictures of everything on the web site that is for sale. It just gets here too late for the pictures and the upload to take place. You can poke around a bit on Auctionzip.com and see if anyone is selling what you are looking for. My auctioneer ID for that site is 20499. Not many pictures up there right now , It is a national auction site, so you should be able to use it to find local auctions in your area.

My brother is a Nikon person and sells photo's. His lens collection is amazing. I am a Canon person. Canon and Nikon are the two most popular. Their popularity does not make them better than the rest but it does mean that used lenses are easy to find when money is tight. Lots of used cameras for sale to upgrade into without having to replace your lens collection too.

As for point and shoot cameras, they are more powerful than ever. You may want to start with a P&S as was suggested earlier. I have several point and shoots I use for birthday parties and family BBQ's (or when someone backs into my car). As you have seen in this post, they can produce beautiful pictures. Many (Fuji is favorite in my experience)have different modes to learn the basics with and prepare for the move to DSLR if you decide to get more serious (unquenchable desire to buy more cameras and lenses: especially lenses).

My opinion stick with Canon or Nikon, get a used DSLR for now. One thing to think of is make sure you get a spare battary. The cold is rough on the battary keep one in the camera and one close to you to stay warm to swap out with. One other thick is to put your camera and lens in a plastic bag before changing to an extream temp. After the camera has adjusted to the temp you can open the bag, this keeps the condensation outside the bag and off the camera.

Hello there. A good starter camera is a simple fixed lens digital. Just point and look at the LED screen. If you like what you see, take the picture. No settings to worry about.
I bought a Vivitar X029 at radio shack for $19. on sale. I use it for a back up if I run out of juice with my Nikon.
It takes beautiful pictures with little effort. And depending on the memory card size, you can take hundreds of photos and video too if you so desire.
In fact the photos I display on this site are taken with it. So take a peek and see what you think.
Cheers,
Naturalite.
