I get that you are emotionally attached to this image. It's great and if that flicks your Bic you had personal success. If you have to walk someone through an image to explain what story it is telling or what is special about it then you have failed. I find nothing compelling about this image. Not color, not sharpness, not contrast, not composition. It is a snapshot you like. Make a "best effort image" and let it speak for itself. Don't tell me what I should like about it or what it means to you.

You two are missing the point of this attempted exercise completely. The criticisms in the Hog have always been verbal only (that I’ve seen). Here I sought visual criticisms. “Show me” examples. This just happened to be the photo that I chose for this exercise.
Most of the Hoggers here are photographers and you can look at their work & surmise how they may work a photo. Some though, offer no photos here, only criticisms. With this approach even they would leave a visual record. I don’t know if you’ve experienced any of them, but most of those I learn nothing from. Isn’t that the whole point? To learn & expand our knowledge & abilities?
So again, what is a snapshot; and can a snapshot only be a snapshot, or can it be “converted” into something else?

Joehei2 and myself both did our version on your picture and have had no comment from you so what was the point in asking folk to work on it....

When you submit a photograph to almost any critique group – you submit your image at your risk. You don't get to tell the critique group how you made the image or why you made the image or what the critiquers should look for. When it is over, it is over. You don't get to argue because it isn't a debate. You don't get to ask what you would do. Although, once in a while, a critiquer will volunteer suggestions. You did not submit a best effort image. It is not a good image to any extent of the imagination and it certainly isn't art. Now you want to criticize that no one seems to like your image and no one will tell you how to make it a good image. That's probably because the focus is not good, the composition is not good, and in general, it is merely a chance snapshot you and you alone love. End of story. Remember to always submit a "best effort" image. If you don't it is sort of an insult to the critiquers.

Sorry nanaval, I wasn’t ignoring you & Joehei2; I was just hoping that this would spark more interest. I think you can see that we had similar approaches, I just tried a “fog” around her to suggest a dream or thought state.

I appreciate y’all participating ... I was hoping some that like photoshopping would have tried; yet even as such, one can see that there is more than one way to look at a photo ... and that was my attempt here. To rouse some visual expressions & not verbal, but I guess that doesn’t interest the majority.

Thank you nanaval & Joehei2 for partaking in my little experiment.

Mike

EXACTLY! I wanted to get away from all of the “you shouldn’t have done it that way ...” comments, and actually have them SHOW us what they would do! It’s easy to take potshots, & it takes some skill &/or experience to give a useful critique; yet it takes an eye & imagination to find a diamond in the rough. Yes, I believe that there’s a diamond here ... maybe only a 1/4 carat, but still something.
I do like your interpretation! I like Monet & the Masters, but lack the skill to draw (shaky hands). So photography is it for me, & my attempt to share.
I hope you enjoyed playing with this subject.

Cheers!

Her shirt is very humdrum. Perhaps you could have caught her facing the other direction. Then the umbrella would be a splash of color. Then I might crop exactly mid-way down the sidewalk so the first lamp you see is from the set where they are close together. And then another crop on the right to remove some unnecessary vertical lines. Something a little like this: But I still don't like that big pole right in front. Oh well!

I agree with the pole problem ... that’s why I turned it into a tree (as shown on the first page).
When we set up the shot, we can get exactly what we want; but when we grab what is there, how many of us can make lemonade? That’s what I was trying here ... let everyone try their own recipe. I know I try it with others’ shots, but unless I do a private post, they (& others) never see it. This attempt was to let everyone play & share.
Hope you had some fun.
Cheers!
Mike

Val, you are a very good listener. I think you have brought Mike's vision to life. Now that I have seen this, I am thinking that what you did may help Mike capture his vision more effectively with his camera. Mike, I was getting a bit annoyed with you, but I think you were asking for help in your own way. I hope Val has shown you what you could do by getting in closer and using a more shallow DOF to blur distractions. Thank you, Val!

Thank you Nightski, glad you thought I helped. I know many thought it a snapshot but when I got what Mike was asking folk to try to do with his picture I realized it was not just a crop.. I did think one person was very out of turn with his comments and capitol letter comments when since he joined in 2011 has not posted picture and only 2 posts which were no complementary to UHH..
