What happens after the impaling. A pre-eating proposition.

They decompose for a few days making them easier to eat.

In the old days there were legends about "Butcher Birds". They were wanton killers that hung up their prey because they killed too much and liked to display their trophies. Pure anthropomorphism of course but I made a good story and got a lot of shrikes killed.

Back in '71 we had just moved into our starter home and had planted a triple trunk scarlet oak in the front yard. One day we were looking out the window at the tree when a Loggerhead Shrike landed in it. He/she had smaller bird in its beak and promptly impaled it on a small branch. He then consumed it before leaving. Since then we've kept an eye out for this fascinating bird but have yet to see one. Guess that's the one and only time. And yeah, we're still in that little starter home. Looks like it's going to be our ender home also.

Keep watching Ron, you never know about birds. I have seen lots of Shrikes, both loggerhead and northern, but only seen the impalement once. May you have many more years in your starter/ender/family home.
