We often get Loggerhead Shrikes in this part of the country, but I think this is an immature Northern Shrike. In any case, he had a vole in his beak in the first image, but impaled it on a thorn in the second. I had heard of this behavior, but this is the first time I had ever seen it. The abundance of branches made it difficult to get a sharp focus.

Nice ones, the end of his/her beak is perfect for tearing flesh.

That mouse is almost as big as the bird. Wonder how long it took the shrike to consume his meal.

We get those in south Texas too. They're also called "butcher birds" because of their habit of impaling their prey on thorns, saving them for later consumption. We often find various lizards and small critters hanging on Mesquite or Huisache thorns.

Good shot!
