I guess my question would be. Considering image quality what advantage would you get from a Nikon lenses compared to the Tamron that seems to have better test specs?

Hi, I currently shoot with a Nikon D750 and was thinking about adding a prime lenses. I have been reading about the Tamron 45mm 1.8 and what I see sounds good but I would like to know if any members of UHH have had experience with that lenses and if so how does it compare to the Nikon 50 1.8 or 1.4. Thanks for your help.

Love mine, it was a recommendation from a low light shooter who works at Tempe Photo (a great group of people). Just wasn't getting what I wanted from the Nikon 50mm.

I have the Nikon 1.8 and tried the Tammy. Both are fine lenses but decided on the Nikon. $$ are close enough that OEM made sense. You can pick up a Nikon 50 1.8 for around $100 used.

The 50mm Nikkors have never been considered to be that great. I own the Nikon 50 1.2, 1.4 & 1.8 along with the Tamron 45 and the Tamron gets the most use, although lately my new Fujifilm system has taken over.

I have both Nikon (D750) and Fujifilm X-T2. I have only one lens (18-55) for the Fujifilm but am thinking about some sort of macro Fuji lens for the X-T2 rather than a macro lens for the D750. I do like the Fujifilm camera. Basically all metal, lighter and smaller than the Nikon.

A forum-posted jpeg doesn't prove much,
but FWIW, this is slightly cropped from a
20MP Canon SLR. Mid-aperture, ISO 640,
open shade, Tamron 45. VC & 1/100 sec.

Nikon glass generally holds its value better than 3rd party glass. I've never worried about the resale value as I am a pack rat and tend to hold onto stuff forever. My strategy is simple, buy the best lens I can afford independent of manufacturer.

I use the Nikon D750 with the Tamron 45mm 1.8 Di VC USM lens with excellent results. In my opinion the Tamon 45mm is sharper than the Nikon and better built. i have used it for about 6 months now and love it. The vibration control is amazing and allows sharp shots in low light. The Nikon D750 is already a low light marvel so the Tamron 45mm lens just enhances.

I trust DxOMark.com testing methods. Based on the attached table, I ended up with the Tamron, which I use on both a D800 and D850. I tend to weight sharpness higher than Distortion and CA, which can be corrected in PP. The negative I see with the Tamron is Transmission at 2.3 stops compared to the Nikon and Sigma at 1.4 and 1.7 stops respectively. Just as a reminder, Transmission, or t-stops, is the actual amount of light the lens passes to the sensor, so the Nikon and Sigma are more efficient lenses. The negative on the Nikon is a significant drop in sharpness at large and small f-stops. Both the Sigma and Tamron are sharper over the entire f-stop range. The sigma is probably a slightly better lens, but the Tamron is right up there and less expensive. In any case, it has performed very well for me.
