Hi, I currently shoot with a Nikon D750 and was thinking about adding a prime lenses. I have been reading about the Tamron 45mm 1.8 and what I see sounds good but I would like to know if any members of UHH have had experience with that lenses and if so how does it compare to the Nikon 50 1.8 or 1.4. Thanks for your help.

Optically its just as good. But its even more versatile because of the stabilization if shooting in low light. I have used mine in museums where no flash or tripod is allowed, shooting at 1/8sec hand held with a D750 and got excellent results.

I recently bought a D750 and I've had the Tamron 45mm f/1.8 SP VC lens for a couple of years. I'm using the Tamron 45mm on the D750 now. The Tamron has vibration compensation, a metal lens barrel and is fully weather sealed. Having vibration compensation is a real plus. I've done model photo shoots where I've used shutter speeds as low as 1/30 second. The images are stable and totally free of any blur.

If you get the Tamron, you might notice that it focuses a little slower than comparable lenses. I read that Tamron intentionally traded off a little focusing speed in favor of focusing accuracy. I've noticed that it focuses extremely consistently. I would rather have consistency than very quick focusing.

It's not its sharpest wide open at f/1.8. I usually stop down to about f/2.8 or f/3.2 for really great sharpness.

Here's a shot I did with the Tamron 45mm f/1.8 SP VC lens on a D7000. I'm starting to shoot with it on my D750 now. The shutter speed was 1/30 second with vibration compensation on. MT shooter above has used even slower shutter speeds with good results.

I’ve used the Tamron 45 f/1.8 on a 750 as well, The VC is excellent, I had both the Nikon 50 1.8 and 1.4, and now only have the Tamron.

`

I use ALL the lenses mentioned so far.

I have nothing to add. Just confirming
what others have said. Since there are
so few users, every vote counts !

If anything, I object to a "just as good"
rating vs all the Nikkors. IMNSHO the
Tamron is very plainly better. YMMV.

Have the Nikon AF-S 50mm f/1.4G I use on my D850 and D500 and it is Ok, but not a great lens. I pulled up a comparison on DxOmark.com for the D750. The Nikon 50mm f/1.4D and Tamron 45mm f/1.8 have the same overall rating of 33, but the Tamron has a sharpness rating of 22 where the Nikon has a sharpness rating of 18. The lens I have, Nikon 50mm f/1.4G, has an overall rating of 31 with the same sharpness rating as the D lens of 18. The Nikon 50mm f/1.8G has an overall rating of 30 with a sharpness rating of 17. The Nikon 50mm f/1.8D has an overall rating of 29 with a sharpness rating of 19.

I am glad I read your post about the Tamron prime 45mm. I have 2 Tamrons (24-70 G2 and the 150-600 G2) and I really like them.

Thanks to everyone that responded and a big thanks to CO for sharing his image. The image speaks a thousand words. With VC on this lenses and a steady hand a beautiful image can be had a 1/30 second.

If you want to be happy and really like your image results, this is the only 50 I own and it does an excellent job.
