My sister, who is 77, is looking for a point and shoot camera. Budget is around $300. She wants something where the lens will zoom. She is also looking for a camera where she doesn't have to fiddle looking for certain presets like "beach shots" or "low light shots." She wants a camera that will recognize to do that on its own. Any recommendations?
Consider the "Panasonic Lumix" line of Point & Shoot Cameras, I had one (forgot which model), was a great travel camera, fit in my Shirt pocket,(now that's where my "Smartphone" goes.), Took great photos, decent Zoom, very easy to use. Go to a Camera Store and Look & Feel, ask questions you might have about camera.

I have some Fuji P&S Superzooms that have the SR Auto (Scene Recognition Auto) and they work quite well. They are reasonably priced and work on AA batteries. Great little starter cameras, will do full auto to full manual, and everything in between.
I bought a half dozen different models to give to family members for Christmas, because I thought they would like something besides their phones to shoot with. Well, bad idea Gramps, ( I asked after I bought them and found out no one wanted a camera for Christmas ). I have models from 18X zoom all the way to 50X, like new, some still have the boxes, and camera bag, cables, caps, straps, cards, batteries (they all run on AA, alkaline or rechargeable, which I wish more cameras did). I am going to put them on Ebay at some point. If she would like to try one out, PM me and I'll send it to you and she can try one out and see if she likes a P&S, just return it in same condition, or if she wants to keep it, I'd sell one fully equipped for a nice low price ($35 to 95 depending on the model) paypal or cash/check. I know it probably sounds strange, but they are all just sitting in the case, waiting to be used......

Hey sounds good -- can you send me the models?
I bought my wife a Sony HX400V for Christmas and she loves it. If you hunt a little, you can find a deal on it for $300. This camera has a Zeiss lens and is one of those "super zoom" cameras that goes from 24mm to 1200mm (50x optical). The Sony received better reviews than its Nikon or Canon equivalent and several Hoggers highly recommended it.
Most any P&S will do that if you just use Auto mode. Keep the zoom range short, 120 max would be fine. Be aware that the cheaper P&S's will have a bit of lag time to write to the SD card so steadiness before and after the shot is important. Otherwise the photos could end up blurry from camera movement.

I don't think any camera is able to recognize beach shots or low light shots on its own. That's why they have the little dial with the icons on it.
RATS....I feel so cheated...I have no little icons on my dial....Lucky You HAHAA

There are phone cameras available with optical zoom lenses.

Yes, please list the cameras -- my sister may up her budget if she can get what she wants!
Several posts back you asked me to list more expensive cameras.
My current favorite is the Olympus TG-5. It is billed as a rugged, tough model and you can take it underwater. What makes if fun is that it is so very good above water with a variety features, including small size and automatic shooting. Telephoto zoom is there, but limited.
My wife's favorite makes me jealous! She bought a Panasonic ZS-100 and has taken it on several trips. It is purse (pocket) sized, has lots of telephoto zoom and a wonderfully capable automatic mode. It benefits from having a larger sensor that other small cameras.
Once my favorite was the Sony RX-100. I have version one. It has been so successful that Sony has pushed it through 6 updates. The current version is "VA". If all of my cameras were stolen or lost, I would have to get the "Sony RX-100 VA".
The only reason I stopped using the RX-100 was that I was developing a video habit. Lusting after a small, travel sized, camera that could shoot 4K video, my wife gave me a Panasonic LX-100. The Sony RX-100 updates added 4K video a couple years later. The RX-100 would be my current favorite if she had not given me the more playful Olympus TG-5.
Since you asked for a list, that's it. Bottom line is that if small, smart automatic, zoom, quality construction and fantastic images are on your list I would buy the Panasonic ZS-100 or (maybe) the updated ZS-200.

Nikon Coolpix, Canon ELPHs, and Panasonic FZ80 are great. Although Sony has some exceptional products, their menus get a little on the hunt and search for info side and she may not want the learning curve with them.
