I took these photos in Yorktown, VA. As most of you should know, this is where the British finally surrendered and the US won our independence.

I'm curious which of the bridge photos you like best, and why. This is my first photo submission for critique, so let me have it. I have posted elsewhere on UHH but nit here.

The third photo is the Victory Monument. Comments also welcome.

RCJets, I like the first photo best; the colors of the bridge are more muted and I suspect more Natural. We have sailed under this bridge but my attention was more on the several USCG vessels playing or practicing boarding small power boats than on the colors of the bridge .

Do/did you fly RC planes? I did but long ago (before the "jet age") from about 1966 to 1983 when a growing family, small business and a sailboat started to demand more time. I still miss it and have one biplane built in '75-76 in the garage for old times sake. I prefer the tail draggers and this one never crashed .

Thanks everyone for your nice comments.
This is a Double Swing Bridge. If you look closely, the supports for the section with the house on top and the section beyond it are much larger than the rest. The sections they support rotate 90 degrees so that those sections are parallel to each other. In this configuration, the entire width between those supports are wide open to transiting vessels, typically Navy ships.

One very interesting fact about this bridge is that the entire span was replaced in less than a month in the eighties. Each section was built on high piers in Norfolk. When all were complete, the old sections were removed. Barges were secured under section and attached to that section, which was then detached from the adjoining section. Once secured to the barge, it was flooded enough to allow that section to drop away from the bridge. The new sections were replaced in the reverse order.

I did not get to actually see this process, but I did see the sections being built along the Norfolk water front. This process was all over the local news during the brief period it took place.

I see 2 "draw bridge" gates (alternating red & white bands). Does this bridge open to let large vessels thru?
One thing is clear - this bridge is not about to fall down any time soon.

The link below takes you to a video of the history of this bridge. It begins with the replacement of the old span with the new one. While I said above it was done in less than a month, the entire bridge was replaced on site ion nine days. You read that right! Watch the video. This was really a historic undertaking. It's a long URL, but just click on it and it should open.

Maybe a slight preference for the richer colors of #1, however both are nice.

I like the first bridge. The longer sweeping lines, and the blue carries through the sky and water, especially underneath the bridge. Nicer colors.

I agree.

I prefer #1. I like the longer stretch of bridge and the inclusion of a little more detail in the left foreground for balance.

yes,

Hi JCam,

Yes, I do fly RC. I have a few ducted fans but have not flown them for several years. These are all .91 powered, weigh around ten lbs each, and really need a hard surface runway. I also had a sailboat, a 30 footer that I used to race. As you are aware, that takes hobby money bigtime.

Thanks for your comment.

I prefer the composition of the first bridge and think the clouds add a lot of interest. All of the images appear to be well shot.
