It is a fine camera in its own right, Jim. Learn it, use it, and enjoy it. You will get great pics with it. Never look back!

Don't think you need any more confirmation as to what a great camera it is. But I'll add that I owned it, loved it. Graduated to the lumix g85, and now have the g9.

It has been a top camera of its class. I own it and love it.
It has a larger sensor (1"), 20 MP, 400mm Leitz designed zoom and tilting screen (for an incredible price $500) - untill the arrival of an upgraded Sony RX10 IV - with only a little bit longer Zeiss designed zoom (600mm) - but is 3x more expensive ($1500).
If you think you need a longer zoom or a programmable selftimer, go for - a king, the Canon SX50 HS - if you can get it?

Most opinions say the FZ 1000 is a better camera than the FZ2500, its replacement, and certainly worth the price.

Such A bold assertion surely demands a supporting argument! I haven’t encountered a single comment to support your assertion.
I upgraded from the FZ1000 to the FZ2500 and have congratulated myself every time I pick up the camera.
Granted, If - and only ‘if’ - money is the dominant consideration, I’d have a hard choice between a used FZ1000 and the FZ2500. But your unqualified statement simply won’t wash.

I didn't mean to come across bold. When I was shopping for a new camera the FZ2000 or FZ2500 were out. Going through many youtube presentations convinced me that FZ2500 picture quality was slightly less than the FZ1000. Video was better on the FZ2500. I'm not a video guy so I went with the cheaper rendition. By the way are the FZ2500 the same camera as the FZ2000?

The FZ2500 was primarily released to compete with Sony's RX10 #1&2. It didn't measure up to the first two models, let alone the spectacular model #4.

The OP’s topic is FZ vs FZ.

I've had an FZ1000 for 3 or 4 years, love it. Managed to drop my first one, fully zoomed, on frozen ground in China. Lost anything above 200mm.

Researched a replacement, and the best one for me was another FZ1000. Enjoy the light weight and the functionality. My travel companion has a FZ300, and I am a bit envious of her longer zoom (600mm), but still prefer the FZ1000. I travel 3 to 4 months a year, 10000 to 20000 photos, whether it's mountain landscapes, people street shots, or inside museums (for low light, I use the handheld night shot scene mode, though you do lose RAW). Does a great job with panoramas. Couldn't do without the fully articulated screen though I mostly use the electronic viewfinder. I've found some online tutorials, but I do wish there was a book that explained more of the nuances. For me, does everything I want, a keeper.

I always thought the object of our photography was to capture images that we create and enjoy. Having a camera that does that for you makes the question irrelevant. "It's not how big it is, it's what you do with it!"
Too many of us get GAS when we read a photo magazine or see the pros out with their white Canon lenses, but it's the results and only the results you should be concerned about. Just sayin'.

You bought it; you're using it. Are YOU happy with your results?
No one else's opinion matters. 👍👍

If you made a mistake, so did I. I have been trying to discover what that mistake is for 3 years and have been unsuccessful in my quest.

I also bought the FZ1000. I generally use a Nikon DSLR, but wanted a lightweight camera for travel and casual photos. After considerable research, I settled on the FZ1000. I think it is a great camera for a bridge camera and use it quite a bit.
