I just did a few books using Shutterfly and experimented with some other like Amazon. Shutterfly's book editing software is very easy to work with and allows you a great deal of flexibility in the Advanced Editing mode. The Storyboard feature allows you to arrange your photos easily which allows you to focus on presentation separately. Splitting up these two workflows makes the process a lot smoother.

Can anyone recommend a photo-album app or company? I used Apple for this in the past, but they discontinued that service. I’m looking to create a nice bound book of printed photos from my digital library. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I also use Adoramapix. Once you get on their email list, you get notifications of sales. I have seen their sales other places, but I think that is because I went to the website.
Their prices are good, and even better with sales. As Jerry said, you don't have to use their template. Or you can use a template to start and modify it - such as putting more images on a page. You can add captions, and choose the paper. They have both soft and hard cover. Worth looking into! For me they are especially convenient because shipping turnaround time is short. [I live in southwestern Vermont, not all that far from New York City.] The main thing slowing down shipping is the carrier - the shipment must go with their regular routes and that involves switching trucks along the way. Still, 2 days usually is pretty good for regular ground shipment.

I've used Costco and Mixbook. There was a processing error on one of the Mixbook projects I had. They fixed the processing glitch, completely redid that book. No cost to me and no problems. I like both. I start with blank pages, add what I want with background and photos.

Blurb is also a company where you can make books. Many format options plus you can also just drag and drop images on a page and size them as desired. They also send sales notices by e-mail at least once a week. One thing I really liked about Blurb is that if you order a dust jacket option, you can add text on the inside of the dust jacket both at the front and rear of the book. Adds a published look to the book.

I've also used Shutterfly for a number of books and they are good to work with as well.

For some time I was able to order 8.5" x 11" books, but recently it seems like most of the compaties have changed to a 8" x 10" format. I preferred the slightly larger size, particularly for landscape/scenery images.

Like you I used Apple in the past. Started to use Lightroom but the software was not very flexible. Adobe did the LR deal with Blurb which I think is a Google company. I went to blurb.com and they had video tutorials on the design software. I am currently building my first book with them. If the print quality is good I will do more. Also, you can order samples of the paper alternatives for a few bucks.

BLURB !!!!
By far the price is right; the choice of quality easy and they print quickly. Look at blurb.com
While you are there go to their bookstore and search on 'rleonetti'. You will find examples you can preview full size of books I have finished.

Can't help but add my vote for Shutterfly. I have used them pretty much since they came on the market. I think they are clearly one of the best commercial outfits I have ever dealt with. Eminently fair if you ever have a problem and very, very responsive. I regularly use them for calendars, photo books, prints and more. They are easy to use and provide excellent assistance if you have a problem.

I and my daughters use Blurb. So easy to use. Excellent grade of paper and hard bound books are impressive.

Snapfish, Shutterfly, Mixbook, Blurb.......a lot of very good ones to choose from. Comfortable with all listed. As with most things....need to research according to your likes or dislikes. Features vary among all.

I appreciate all of the responses. I am working on a family history with mostly scanned old pictures and a lot of narrative. Of those mentioned are any more tolerant of a photo book with a greater amount of narrative. Right now I have built the structure in MS Publisher, but have been told that no printer will accept a publisher file for making a book.

I have been using an App called ‘FreePrints’ photobooks, that I found in the apple App Store. There you can get a free basic photo book a month, softbound and limited to 20 pages with various layouts. Or you can create a higher quality book with as many pages (over 20) you want with various styles of quality , and they will apply the free book as a credit. For any “serious” books for that occasional client, or a gift I use Bay Photo.

Thanks Bfree2. I also have that app and always wondered how they can do those books for free. I guess it’s the hook to get you to upgrade the order. Appreciate the feedback.
