I prefer the second rendering.

#2 is my preference, #1 is too cropped and really doesn't go anywhere.

My choose, because it makes me feel that the destination is the mountains.

Since you asked for opinions: #1 but uncrop the top to include smidgeon of sky above the hilltop for the fullwidth of the photo. (don't let the ridge line touch the edge of the frame) Also clone out the tree on the right center mid ground slope.

But as with everthing in photography its's all subjective. The important question is more like "As the photographer, which one do you like best? Which one came closest to your previsualization for the photo? Which one tells the visual story that attracted you to the photo in the first place? What compositional elements should you change in order to better convey the story?

I liked the fourth image because of both the composition and the depth of the entire photo. Beautiful.

I too prefer something in the middle, as I like the close-up feeling of traveling that road but want to see more of the vista I'm entering. Something similar to the attached, if you'll forgive me cropping your image.

I like #1. Telephoto compression vs. wide angle spread. Probably shot from the same location.

Number one looks more artistic, number two--despite the fact that the entire mountain--looks more ordinary.

Well, while #1 tends to lead me down the road towards the last curve where something intriguing must certainly lurk around the bend, the image tends to focus (no pun) solely on the road. I lean towards #2. #2 is a better example of "the Rule of Thirds," better composition and balance, DOF, and displays the awaiting destination of a snow-capped mountain range to be discovered and where the road must surely traverse through a snowy covered valley below. Ah, adventure!

#2 takes me on a journey and into the unknown ... And, isn't this a big part of which art and photography portray? The imagination of the mind can be a journey in itself.
